No Holds Barred: Strikeforce, Boxing, Doping, Wrestling, Grappling

(Photo: Esther Lin/Strikeforce)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the disappointing Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card held February 26 in San Jose, California. We criticize the lack of effective grappling and striking by many of the fighters on that card.

We also discuss the latest developments in the battle against dope cheating, including the first positive test of a dope cheat for use of human growth hormone, and how the athletic commissions regulating boxing and mixed martial arts have ignored this important development.

With all these problems in mixed martial arts and boxing, we thus conclude by looking forward to the upcoming championship tournaments in college wrestling, the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010, the start of the 2010 roller derby season, and more.

This type of analysis is what No Holds Barred is about, so listen, learn, comment, and enjoy.

No Holds Barred: Stephen Quadros Previews February 26 Strikeforce Challengers Card

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with "The Fight Professor", the veteran broadcaster, actor, and musician Stephen Quadros.

He will be one of the announcers on the live Showtime telecast of the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card taking place this Friday night, February 26, at the Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California.

The main event of this card pits MMA veteran Trevor Prangley against the exciting Karl "The Psycho" Amoussou in a middleweight fight. The women fighters will once again try to steal the show, as the unbeaten Sarah Kaufman faces Takayo Hashi of Japan for the vacant Strikeforce women's featherweight (135-pound) championship. In another fight to advance the winner towards possible stardom, up-and-coming fighter Luke Rockhold takes on former University of Iowa Hawkeye All-American wrestler Paul Bradley in a middleweight contest. Also on the televised card, James Terry takes on Tarec Saffiedine and Raul Castillo fights Yancy Medeiros.

In a lengthy discussion, we previewed this card with "The Fight Professor". We discussed what we might expect in each televised fight. We also commented upon the latest news about Strikeforce.

No Holds Barred: Devon Alexander, Juan Urango, Don King

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the 140-pound title unification fight between WBC champion Devon Alexander (19-0, 12 KOs) and IBF champion Juan Urango (22-2-1, 17 KOs). This fight will take place Saturday, March 6, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO.

We spoke with both Devon Alexander and Juan Urango on a media conference call this past week, and the discussion of how they each will approach this fight resulted in some verbal fireworks. We also spoke with Don King, who promotes Alexander, about the importance of title unification fights, and also got comments from him on the importance of the Internet media.

In addition, we contrast the Alexander-Urango fight, which should be very competitive, with the numerous mismatches and showcase fights typical of boxing, such as the Giovanni Segura-Walter Tello brawl this past Saturday night, February 20, which was entertaining but one-sided.

No Holds Barred: Braulio Estima, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with three-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and ADCC 2009 Absolute and 88 kg submission fighting champion, Braulio Estima.

Besides being one of the most talented and exciting grapplers in the world, he will be making his professional mixed martial arts debut for Shine Fights at a date and against an opponent to be announced very shortly.

While still on a seminar tour of U.S., we spoke with him by phone about his accomplishments, plans, and philosophy. We discussed why he is now entering mixed martial arts, when his first fight is likely to be, and how he is transitioning from jiu-jitsu and grappling to mixed martial arts. We discussed why he likes to fight and compete, and his philosophy which has made him such an exciting competitor who uses many innovative techniques and wins many of his matches by submission. He explained how jiu-jitsu was instrumental in steering him away from being involved in trouble as a youth, and why such martial arts training is important for the youth today. We discussed his intention of competing in mixed martial arts while continuing to compete in grappling, including the Super Fight in the 2011 ADCC World Championships. And we explored the possibility of grappling becoming popular as a spectator sport, and much more.

No Holds Barred: James Feng, Director of Fight Life

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with James Feng, the director of the forthcoming mixed martial arts documentary film "Fight Life".

"Fight Life" will attempt to portray the reality of the mixed martial arts business from the standpoint of the professional fighters. From receiving low pay on small shows, to fighting as a profession without any medical insurance, to surviving through their often unglamorous but grueling everyday lives, the documentary will aim at chronicling their real lives, rather than some canned and staged version passed off as a "reality" show.

Expected to be released in June 2010, "Fight Life" currently stars Frank Shamrock, Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Lyle Beerbohm, Ryan Schultz, Matt Lindland, Miesha Tate, Gilbert Melendez, "Big" John McCarthy, and author Sam Sheridan.

We sat down with James Feng to discuss "Fight Life" and what he hopes to accomplish with this film.

Malaak Shabazz, Malcolm X's Daughter, and Ain't I A Woman Garment Worker Rally, on Carson's Corner

Special Edition of New Jersey's Only Progressive Radio Show!

New Jersey's progressive son returns. Bob Carson is back with a vengeance:

In our main interview, journalist and activist Eddie Goldman (http://eddiegoldman.com/) spoke with Malaak Shabazz, the youngest daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz. Malaak Shabazz is a human rights and peace and social justice activist who works at the United Nations. Besides February being Black History Month, February 21 also marks the 45th anniversary of the assassination of her father, Malcolm X. We discussed the legacy of her parents, her work at the U.N., and the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center (http://theshabazzcenter.net/). The Center is located on the site of the old Audubon Ballroom where her father was assassinated in 1965.

Eddie Goldman also attended a rally this past Thursday, Feb. 11, in New York called by the Ain't I A Woman?! Campaign (http://www.aintiawoman.org/). This rally was in support of predominantly Chinese and Latino women garment workers who were protesting against sweatshop conditions at Cache, Inc., a luxury women's retail and manufacturer chain. We spoke with Doreen Wang of the Ain't I A Woman?! Campaign and two of the many workers who have filed a federal lawsuit against this company. We learned how they worked at Cache's subcontracted factory over 70 hours a week without receiving overtime pay and sometimes not even receiving minimum wage, were not allowed to take sick time, and were retaliated against and fired when they complained. We also discussed how other workers and their supporters can assist in this and other workers' struggles.

No Holds Barred: With Valero and Jones Fighting, More Boxing Tragedies on the Way

(Photo of Valero and DeMarco: Tom Casino/Showtime)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses why boxing is clearly headed to becoming a theater of even more in-ring tragedies.

The fight this past Saturday night between Edwin Valero and Antonio DeMarco, held in Monterrey, Mexico, is a case in point. Valero was in a major motorcycle accident in 2001. According to Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred, Valero "suffered a significant hemorrhage on the surface of the brain. To treat him, they removed part of his skull that was never replaced, nor was he given a prosthesis (such as a metal plate or donated bone)." This led to Valero being put on medical suspension after trying to fight in New York in 2004, and he has since not been licensed to fight anywhere in the U.S.

"No one has determined that he is not at greater risk because of this history,” wrote Dr. Goodman. Nonetheless, Valero was featured in the main event of a card televised in the U.S. on Showtime.

We thus discuss the case of Edwin Valero, and also explain why the April 3 fight between 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins and 41-year-old Roy Jones Jr. also could be another step on the road to yet another tragedy. Plus, we continue our commentary on the disgraceful failure of Manny Pacquiao to accept serious testing for banned and dangerous substances. And we conclude with an observation just where this all may be heading for professional boxing.

No Holds Barred: Renato Tavares, Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010, and MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with one of the masters and top coaches in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling, Renato Tavares.

Renato was just involved in running the East Coast and West Coast Trials for the richest and most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event in the world, the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010. That event takes place April 15-17 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and will distribute the biggest prize in the history of Jiu-Jitsu, US$150,000.

Our discussion not only centered on the results of these qualifying tournaments, in which several purple and brown belts emerged victorious over more experienced black belts, but also on the development of jiu-jitsu as a professional sport independent of, and different from, mixed martial arts. While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling of course remain the key foundations of mixed martial arts, the growth of both gi and no-gi tournaments all around the world is a welcome phenomenon.

We discussed these developments, as well as why it is so important for parents to have their children training in some style of martial arts or grappling, rather than just being occupied by television, video games, and the like. And we also discussed the opening of his new academy in Vero Beach, Florida, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Joe Warren on Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter Joe Warren.

A 2006 Greco-Roman wrestling world champion, and one of the most exciting competitors on the mat, Joe Warren has just signed to fight in the Bellator Fighting Championships mixed martial arts promotion in their featherweight (145 lbs.) tournament, starting this April. After just a few months of training, he made his mixed martial arts debut in 2009 in the Dream featherweight tournament in Japan. He won his first two fights over veterans Chase Beebe and Kid Yamamoto to advance to the finals, before losing to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Bibiano Fernandes.

We spoke at length with Joe Warren about his plans to continue wrestling while fighting. He told us why he believes that wrestling is a tougher sport than mixed martial arts. He elaborated on the relationship between wrestling and mixed martial arts, and the transition wrestlers must make when they become professional fighters. He discussed his fights in Dream, the upcoming tournament in Bellator, his goal of wrestling in the 2012 Olympics, his plans to open a new gym in Denver, Colorado, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson and Iowa State Wrestling Midseason Report

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman gets a midseason report from Kevin Jackson, the head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones.

Coach Jackson explains why he believes that defending NCAA champion Jake Varner, who is undefeated at 197 pounds this season, is the leading candidate for the Hodge Trophy, awarded to the most dominant college wrestler each year. We discuss the victory this past Sunday, Jan. 31, by Iowa State over Cornell, and the performances of the Cyclone wrestlers, who won seven of the ten matches. Coach Jackson lays out what second-ranked Iowa State, whose only losses this season have been to the undefeated and top-ranked University of Iowa Hawkeyes, must do to win a national team title at the 2010 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, March 18-20, in Omaha, Nebraska. And we discuss what Iowa State has in store for the rest of the regular season as well as to which wrestlers particular attention should be paid.

In addition, we discuss the relation of mixed martial arts and wrestling. After winning an Olympic gold medal and two world championships in freestyle wrestling, Coach Jackson fought in mixed martial arts in 1997 and 1998, compiling a 4-2 record in UFC, Extreme Fighting, and Extreme Challenge. We discuss the problems wrestlers face in attempting to compete in both sports at the same time, and why he believes that wrestling is the best preparation for young athletes looking to fight someday in mixed martial arts.
