No Holds Barred: Joe Warren on Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter Joe Warren.

A 2006 Greco-Roman wrestling world champion, and one of the most exciting competitors on the mat, Joe Warren has just signed to fight in the Bellator Fighting Championships mixed martial arts promotion in their featherweight (145 lbs.) tournament, starting this April. After just a few months of training, he made his mixed martial arts debut in 2009 in the Dream featherweight tournament in Japan. He won his first two fights over veterans Chase Beebe and Kid Yamamoto to advance to the finals, before losing to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Bibiano Fernandes.

We spoke at length with Joe Warren about his plans to continue wrestling while fighting. He told us why he believes that wrestling is a tougher sport than mixed martial arts. He elaborated on the relationship between wrestling and mixed martial arts, and the transition wrestlers must make when they become professional fighters. He discussed his fights in Dream, the upcoming tournament in Bellator, his goal of wrestling in the 2012 Olympics, his plans to open a new gym in Denver, Colorado, and much more.

Good show. These guys behind Bellator seem to be organized and ready to roll.

I think the tournament is itself a way to draw an audience. I know I don't follow any team sports until the playoffs start.
