No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson and Iowa State Wrestling Midseason Report

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman gets a midseason report from Kevin Jackson, the head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones.

Coach Jackson explains why he believes that defending NCAA champion Jake Varner, who is undefeated at 197 pounds this season, is the leading candidate for the Hodge Trophy, awarded to the most dominant college wrestler each year. We discuss the victory this past Sunday, Jan. 31, by Iowa State over Cornell, and the performances of the Cyclone wrestlers, who won seven of the ten matches. Coach Jackson lays out what second-ranked Iowa State, whose only losses this season have been to the undefeated and top-ranked University of Iowa Hawkeyes, must do to win a national team title at the 2010 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, March 18-20, in Omaha, Nebraska. And we discuss what Iowa State has in store for the rest of the regular season as well as to which wrestlers particular attention should be paid.

In addition, we discuss the relation of mixed martial arts and wrestling. After winning an Olympic gold medal and two world championships in freestyle wrestling, Coach Jackson fought in mixed martial arts in 1997 and 1998, compiling a 4-2 record in UFC, Extreme Fighting, and Extreme Challenge. We discuss the problems wrestlers face in attempting to compete in both sports at the same time, and why he believes that wrestling is the best preparation for young athletes looking to fight someday in mixed martial arts.
