NO HOLDS BARRED: Frank Shamrock

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the announcement Tuesday that Bob Meyrowitz, the former CEO of Semaphore Entertainment Group, which produced the original, classic UFC events from 1993 to 2001, is returning to mixed martial arts. His new league is called YAMMA Pit Fighting (YPF), and will be debuting Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with a pay-per-view show.

In the main part of this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, we speak with mixed martial arts legend Frank Shamrock.

In a lengthy interview, Frank discusses why he has not signed and will not sign with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC); the need for fighters to defend their rights, embrace their own brands, and be built as stars; how mixed martial arts is regressing in technique; art and professional athleticism in MMA; how good a fighter he believes he is today; his upcoming fight with Cung Le March 29; the likelihood of a fight with his older brother, Ken Shamrock; the future of the latest wave of MMA companies; the possibility of a rematch with Tito Ortiz once his contract with UFC is over; Hillary Clinton, John McCain, Willie Nelson, and country music; and more.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Bas Rutten, Jay Larkin, Eddie Alvarez, Paul Daley, Tonya Evinger, Kala Kolohe Hose

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman focuses on recent developments in two of the most important mixed martial arts companies, EliteXC and the International Fight League (IFL).

EliteXC held a card Friday, Jan. 25, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This card was televised in the U.S. on Showtime on their ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series, which features up-and-coming fighters, as does their ShoBox series for boxing.

On that card, in the main event, local favorite Eddie Alvarez knocked out Ross Ebanez in the second round. Paul Daley of England scored a first-round knockout over Sam Morgan. Kala Kolohe Hose of Honolulu scored a first-round knockout over Fred Belleton. Former U.S. national women's wrestling team member Tonya Evinger defeated Julie Kedzie with a first-round rear naked choke submission in what some are calling an upset.

After their fights, we spoke with Eddie Alvarez, Paul Daley, Tonya Evinger, and Kala Kolohe Hose.

The IFL made a series of important announcements last week, including naming former UFC and Pancrase champion Bas Rutten to the newly-created position of Vice President, Fighter Operations.

We spoke with both Bas Rutten and IFL CEO Jay Larkin about these changes as well as what to expect this year from the IFL on a media teleconference call last week.

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing some of the social implications of the rise to prominence of fighters from the countries of the former Soviet Union.

Two of those fighters, IBF junior bantamweight champion Dimitri Kirilov (29-3, 9 KOs) of St. Petersburg, Russia, and unbeaten junior welterweight Dmitriy Salita (27-0-1, 15 KOs), originally from Odessa, Ukraine, will be headlining a card Thursday, February 28, at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. In the main event, Kirilov will be making the first defense of his title, facing Mexican fighter Cecilio Santos (22-8-2, 12 KOs). In the co-feature, Salita will be fighting an opponent yet to be named.

SecondsOut Radio: Roy Jones, Devon Alexander, Alex Bunema, Kevin Cunningham, Steve Cunningham, Cory Spinks

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's packed edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman reviews the card which took place this past Saturday night, January 19, at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was headlined by the unanimous decision victory by Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) over Felix "Tito" Trinidad Jr. (42-3, 35 KOs). This fight was held at a catch weight of 170 pounds.

We have the comments of Roy Jones at the postfight news conference. We also spoke with Roy Jones afterwards along with members of the media. He discussed the fight, how he evaluated his performance, the injury he had coming into it, and his future plans.

We also spoke with 20-year-old rising junior welterweight prospect Devon Alexander (14-0, 8 KOs), who passed the toughest test of his young pro career by winning a 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley (31-8-1, 17 KOs). And we spoke with Kevin Cunningham, his manager and trainer.

Alex Bunema went into his junior middleweight fight Saturday night with former world champion Roman Karmazin a big underdog, and was behind on the scorecards as the fight progressed. But Bunema surprised many by knocking out Karmazin in the tenth round, and revived his career. We spoke with Alex Bunema after his fight.

In addition, we spoke with IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham and IBF junior middleweight champion Cory Spinks about their recent fights and upcoming plans.

    Eddie Goldman on Carson's Corner

Legendary combative sports journalist Eddie Goldman is the guest this week on Carson's Corner.

Eddie (catch his shows at http://nhbnews.blogspot.com/) and Bob sit down for an extended discussion and proceed to put Zuffa under the microscope. If you're a fan of MMA, you will not want to miss this show. You will hear about a side of the UFC that you might not be aware of, and certainly won't be comfortable with. You will hear about how Dana White possibly backstabbed the MMA media, how Zuffa mistreated and mishandled PrideFC, mistreated and mishandled Randy Couture and much, much, much more.

You won't want to miss Goldman's commentary on the state of most MMA radio shows today (e.g., Sherdog's radio programs, etc.). It alone is worth the price of admission!

Bob also answers perhaps the zaniest listener emails to date and previews the upcoming UFC 80 show.

If you've been on the fence about catching an episode of Carson's Corner, this is the show to jump on board. We're backing this show up with a money-back guarantee!

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the disgraceful lawsuit filed Monday in Clark County District Court in Nevada by Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, against their most popular fighter, Randy Couture. As usual, this commentary is no-holds-barred.

We next discuss the card scheduled for this coming Saturday, January 19, at Madison Square Garden in New York, headlined by the clash between boxing legends Roy Jones. Jr. (51-4, 38 KOs) and Felix "Tito" Trinidad Jr. (42-2, 35 KOs). This card will be telecast in the U.S. on HBO Pay-Per-View.

And we spoke with 20-year-old rising junior welterweight prospect Devon Alexander (13-0, 8 KOs), who has the toughest assignment of his young pro career when he faces former world champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley (31-7-1, 17 KOs).

We also begin to preview the EliteXC mixed martial arts card scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16, at the BankUnited Center on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, FL. That card will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime. The main event of that card pits Internet street fighter Kimbo Slice, who is now a professional MMA fighter training with Bas Rutten, against the MMA veteran David "Tank" Abbott.

We spoke with both Tank Abbott and Kimbo Slice about this fight on a media teleconference call Wednesday. We also spoke with promoter Gary Shaw, the EliteXC Live Events President, about how his view on what EliteXC is and will do, and about how they treat their fighters.

SecondsOut Radio: Roy Jones, Felix Trinidad, Larry Hazzard

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews the Roy Jones. Jr.-Felix Trinidad Jr. fight and undercard scheduled for this coming Saturday, January 19, at Madison Square Garden in New York. This card will be telecast in the U.S. on HBO Pay-Per-View.

We spoke with both Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad Jr. at news conferences about what they expect to happen in this fight.

We also spoke with Larry Hazzard Sr., who had been the commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. For almost 22 years, he had headed this commission, which regulates combat sports in that state. In November 2007, however, with no warning or even any reason being given, he was dismissed from that position.

In October 2007, his attorney, James Binns, acting on his behalf, had submitted a letter to New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine outlining a series of major charges of alleged "malfeasance" against officials on the State Athletic Control Board. No response was provided to that letter – except to fire Larry Hazzard a few short weeks later.

Now he is fighting back. A lawsuit was filed Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey against New Jersey state officials alleging, in essence, that he was fired for speaking up and exposing this alleged "malfeasance" on the New Jersey commission.

Right before the Paulie Malignaggi-Herman Ngoudjo fight card at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City Saturday, January 5, Larry Hazzard, along with attorneys James Binns and Sidney Gold, held a news conference. We bring you that press conference in full, plus a follow-up discussion immediately afterwards with Larry Hazzard and a few members of the media.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Wade Schalles and "Wrestling 411", "Mr. Wrestling" Ali Gümüs, and the State of Wrestling

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman focuses on the precarious state of wrestling, both in the U.S. and internationally, and interviews two key people who are working to improve the sport.

A new weekly wrestling highlight show, called "Wrestling 411", will debut Thursday, January 17, 2008, on the CSTV network in the U.S. It will also be available on the Media Sports Productions web site.

To learn more about this important program, we spoke with Wade Schalles, a two-time NCAA wrestling champion, a champion or All-American in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling and in sombo and judo, and a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Wade is now working with Media Sports Productions, and along with people including J Robinson, the head coach of the defending NCAA Div. 1 champion Minnesota Golden Gophers, is promoting this show as a way of popularizing wrestling and overcoming some of the difficulties which have hobbled this sport.

International wrestling is also in decline, according to Ali Gümüs, the leading wrestling journalist in the world. Also known as "Mr. Wrestling" and based in Turkey, he has been an editor and writer for the Turkish publication Tercüman and is the author of numerous books on wrestling. He also serves as the chairman of the Wrestling Commission of AIPS, the International Sports Press Association.

Ali was in New York this week, and we spoke with him about the crisis in international wrestling and what can be done about it.
