  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman reviews the Dec. 29 IFL Grand Prix Finals, which was held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

We spoke with five of the IFL individual champions about their victorious fights and what their plans are: lightweight (155 lbs.) champion Ryan Schultz, featherweight (145 lbs.) champion Wagnney Fabiano, welterweight (170 lbs.) champion Jay Hieron, middleweight (185 lbs.) champion Matt Horwich, and light heavyweight (205 lbs.) champion Vladimir Matyushenko. We also spoke with middleweight Tim Kennedy, who was victorious on this card.

At this event, we once again spoke with "The Natural," Randy Couture, the now-former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion who recently resigned from that promotion. Randy told us which former wrestling champion has said that he would like to compete against him in a grappling match. He also updated us on what his other plans were and the latest in his dispute with the UFC promoters.

We spoke with mixed martial arts legend Ken Shamrock at this event. He discussed his plans for next year as a coach in the IFL, commented on the historical role of the original Lion’s Den in MMA, told us about his coaching a victorious MMA team in Manila, revealed whom he may fight next in MMA, and explained the need for non-exclusive contracts and a fighters' union in MMA.

We also spoke with Guy Mezger, president and matchmaker for the HDNet Fights promotion. HDNet telecast the IFL Grand Prix live in the U.S. on their television network. We discussed with Guy when and where the next HDNet Fights show is likely to take place, who might fight on it, how HDNet Fights is working with other promotions as partners, how HDNet Fights has become the primary sporting event on HDNet, and how HDNet Fights differs from the UFC.

In addition, we spoke with country music star Trace Adkins, who attended this event. And we spoke with Leo Khorolinsky, the manager of former UFC heavyweight champion and current top contender Andrei Arlovski about what is next for his fighter.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Chris Horodecki, Jay Hieron, Paulie Malignaggi, Herman Ngoudjo, Kurt Otto, IFL Grand Prix and 2008 Roadmap

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the Dec. 29 IFL Grand Prix Finals, discusses the 2008 IFL Roadmap, and previews the Jan. 5 fight between Paulie Malignaggi and Herman Ngoudjo.

The International Fight League (IFL) will be holding its 2007 Grand Prix Finals, featuring mixed martial arts fights for individual championships in five weight classes, Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on HDNet and in Canada on Fox Sports World Canada. We discuss all these five title fights and the histories of the fighters involved.

We also hear the comments of 155-pound fighter Chris Horodecki, who fights Ryan Schultz for that title, and 170-pound fighter Jay Hieron, who fights Delson Heleno in another title fight, from a recent media teleconference call.

The IFL will be making some significant changes as it begins its third year of existence in 2008. Most are aimed at expanding the popularity of their organization while cutting financial losses. They issued their 2008 IFL Roadmap outlining these changes, and we offer our comments on that. We also spoke with IFL co-founder and commissioner Kurt Otto on a media teleconference call to discuss this and some other issues with him.

Boxing returns in a big way in the new year with a title fight between IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (23-1, 5 KOs) and challenger Herman Ngoudjo (16-1, 9 KOs) January 5, 2008, at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Paulie Malignaggi and Herman Ngoudjo on a media teleconference call (or at least tried to).

NO HOLDS BARRED: Randy Couture, Frank Trigg, Jason Miller, Rico Chiapparelli, Guy Mezger, Jay White, HDNet Fights

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman reviews the HDNet Fights mixed martial arts show, held Dec. 15 in Dallas, Texas, and plays a series of interviews recorded there.

We start with a commentary on the show itself and an evaluation of the prospects for the success of HDNet Fights, which is owned by Mark Cuban, the wealthy owner of the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA. One thing, however, is certain: Mark Cuban has succeeded in buying his way into becoming a major player in mixed martial arts.

First up is "The Natural," Randy Couture, the now-former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion who recently resigned from that promotion. Randy was at this event to corner fighters Frank Trigg and Jay White. We spoke about Randy's plans for future, his desire to fight top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, his status with UFC, the problems with the structure of mixed martial arts, his desire to compete in grappling, and his continuing relations with the wrestling community.

Wrestling and grappling legend Rico Chiapparelli was also there with Frank Trigg. Rico discusses his plans for 2008 for running shows of the Professional Submission League, which features submission wrestling. We also discuss the need for developing an amateur level for mixed martial arts, and the role of FILA, the international wrestling federation, which is entering the world of grappling.

We next spoke with the always-colorful middleweight Jason "Mayhem" Miller, who defeated Tim Kennedy by unanimous decision on this card. We spoke about his fight and, as usual, Jason offers some prize comments.

Heavyweight fighter Jay White entered his fight Saturday night with Patrick Castillo with an unimpressive 1-5-1 record. But now he is training with Randy Couture, who cornered him in this fight. One quick result already: Jay won this fight in just 50 seconds of the first round with an arm bar. Jay explained his development from a grappler to a mixed martial arts fighter, his prospects for improving as a fighter, and his plans.

Guy Mezger, the former UFC and Pancrase fighter from the Lion's Den, now runs fight operations and is the matchmaker for the HDNet Fights promotion. After this event, we discussed with him how it went, the fights themselves, and the plans for this promotion.

The morning after the show, we spoke with middleweight Frank Trigg, who won his fight over Edwin Dewees with a kimura arm lock in 1:40 of the first round. We discussed this fight, the possibility of him next fighting Jason Miller in a rematch, his plans for fighting with HDNet Fights, the prospects for this promotion.

You can also listen to a recap of this event I did on the Internet radio show Carson's Corner with its host, Bob Carson, who also covered this event from cageside.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Pavlik, Greenburg, HDNet Fights and More

NO HOLDS BARRED: Kelly Pavlik, Ross Greenburg, Bob Arum, Ozell Nelson, Tim Kennedy, Jason Miller, Yuri Foreman, Joshua Clottey, Monte Barrett, Sergio Martinez, Ozzie Smith

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman presents an interview marathon.

At a news conference in New York Tuesday, Dec. 11, we spoke with middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs). He has a rematch at 166 pounds with the man he defeated this past September, Jermain Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs), Feb. 16, 2008, in Las Vegas. We also spoke with Pavlik's promoter, Bob Arum, about the successful year boxing has had in 2007, and Taylor's trainer, Ozell Nelson, about what changes their team plans to make in this rematch with Pavlik and about Taylor's engaging manner.

We also spoke at this news conference with HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg. We got the latest, as if Tuesday afternoon, as to what he expects the number of buys for last Saturday's Mayweather-Hatton pay-per-view. And we spoke with him about what plans HBO might have for televising mixed martial arts events.

On a media teleconference call also Tuesday, we spoke with mixed martial arts fighters Tim Kennedy and Jason "Mayhem" Miller. These two middleweights fight this coming Sat., Dec. 15, on the HDNet Fights card at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Miller and Kennedy first fought each other in February 2003 in an Extreme Challenge tournament, with Kennedy winning a decision.

This past Thursday, Dec. 6, there was a boxing card at the Utopia Paradise Theater in the Bronx, NY. After their fights, we spoke with the new NABF junior middleweight titleholder Yuri Foreman (24-0, 8 KOs), who took a split decision over Andrey Tsurkan (25-3, 16 KOs) to win that belt. We spoke with junior middleweight Sergio Martinez (41-1-1, 21 KO’s), who won his bout by a fourth-round TKO over Russell Jordan. We spoke with heavyweight Monte Barrett (32-6, 18 KOs), who avenged a second-round stoppage by veteran Cliff Couser (26-14, 14 KOs) over him in July by stopping Couser in the second round on this card. We spoke with welterweight contender Joshua Clottey, who has as eliminator fight with the unbeaten Shamone Alvarez Dec. 20 in Las Vegas and was at this card. And we spoke with baseball legend Ozzie Smith who was ringside enjoying the fights about why he likes boxing.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Mayweather-Hatton Review, Wladimir Klitschko, Edwin Moses, S.R. Tommie

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the December 8 showdown between WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) and Ricky Hatton (43-1, 31 KOs). Mayweather won this exciting fight by a tenth-round knockout. We discuss the fight itself and the major controversies it produced. We also discuss why coverage in the British media of this fight was far superior to that in the American media. This fight, carried live on HBO Pay-Per-View in the U.S., will be replayed on HBO Saturday, December 15, at 10:15 PM (EST/PST).

Next, we speak with IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (49-3, 44 KOs), generally regarded as the best in that weight class today. He will be fighting a unification bout with the WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov (22-0-1, 17 KOs) Saturday, February 23, at Madison Square Garden in New York. Klitschko sat down for a roundtable discussion with the media at a news conference last week. We have that entire discussion, where he stresses the need not only for the heavyweight titles to be unified, but also for an international rather than a nationalistic approach to be taken to the sport of boxing.

Wladimir Klitschko is also working with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, an international organization which runs programs around the world assisting over 150,000 young people. We also spoke with Olympic gold medalist hurdler Edwin Moses, chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, about these activities and how Wladimir Klitschko is helping them.

Sultan Ibragimov is promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing. Also at the news conference was S.R. (Sally) Tommie of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. We spoke with her about both their involvement with Seminole Warriors Boxing and this fight, and the general history of the storied Seminole Tribe.

On a series of media teleconference calls, we spoke with all the principals in this fight: Floyd Mayweather Jr., Ricky Hatton, Mayweather's trainer and uncle Roger Mayweather, and Hatton's trainers Billy Graham and Kerry Kayes. We touched on the major themes and storylines of this fight, and got the educated views of both camps about what they expect to happen December 8, and why.
