INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE AND USA WRESTLING ENTER INTO STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO GROW AWARENESS OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS AND USA WRESTLING PROGRAMS

INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE AND USA WRESTLING ENTER INTO STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO GROW AWARENESS OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS AND USA WRESTLING PROGRAMS -- IFL and USA Wrestling

Grassroots events programs and clinics, joint promotional opportunities part of initial focus

NEW YORK and COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 12, 2007 – The International Fight League (OTC.BB: IFLI), the world’s first team-based professional mixed martial arts league, and USA Wrestling, the National Governing Body for wrestling in the United States, today announced a strategic partnership between the two organizations aimed at increasing the awareness level and creating unique grassroots programs and branding opportunities for both groups.

“This is a great day for the IFL and for the sports of Mixed Martial Arts and wrestling,” said IFL Commissioner and Co-Founder Kurt Otto. “This partnership will give us the platform to reach a very passionate demo with one of the most respected National Governing Bodies. This cooperative program will help us further our mission to expose these great IFL athletes to a larger audience and show how they can use their wrestling skills as part of MMA.”

“USA Wrestling is proud to partner with the IFL in this project,” said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director. “Wrestling is a core discipline of MMA and many of the greatest athletes in the sport have a strong wrestling background. This will help us expose wrestling fans and athletes to a much larger audience and grow this Olympic sport by reaching an expanded audience.”

Currently no less than 30% of IFL coaches and athletes come from a wrestling background, many with international and college success. They include Olympic medalist Matt Lindland (Nebraska), two-time Olympian Dan Henderson, past national champion Don Frye (Arizona State) and current athletes Wayne Cole (Oklahoma), Jay Hieron (Nassau Community College and Hofstra University), Ryan McGivern (Iowa), Mike Whitehead (Missouri), Aaron Stark (Wisconsin), Ryan Schultz (Nebraska), Reese Andy (Wyoming), Shad Lierley (NYU) and others.

The partnership will include joint USA Wrestling/IFL clinics and information sessions featuring IFL athletes and coaches and USA Wrestling staff in strategic locations, beginning with the Fan Festival held alongside the USA Wrestling World Team Trials in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 9-10.

This event will determine the U.S. teams for the 2008 World Championships in the Olympic disciplines of men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and men’s Greco-Roman wrestling, as well as the newly recognized discipline of Grappling.

More details concerning the World Team Trials clinic will be published shortly.

Also in the planning process is a multimedia awareness campaign developed to promote both organizations as well as a discount program for USA Wrestling members to attend IFL events nationwide.

Each of the nine regular season IFL events will consist of four teams – each with an athlete in all five weight classes competing – for a minimum of 10 bouts per card. The team that wins the best three of five match setup will be declared the team winner for the match, similar to collegiate and high school wrestling dual meets. The IFL also differs from other MMA organizations in that the bouts are held in an oversized five-rope boxing ring with three, four-minute rounds, designed to create the most compelling in-arena experience for local fans.

Each of the 12 IFL teams for 2007 will compete in three regular season events; the teams with the top four overall win-loss team records will advance to the semi-finals, which will be held on Thursday, August 2, at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. The 2007 IFL Finals will then be held at The Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 15.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Kevin Jackson, Wrestling, and Mixed Martial Arts

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, a 1992 Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion in freestyle wrestling. Now based at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., he is the head freestyle coach for the U.S. national team, which competes in Olympic and international competition and is part of USA Wrestling. He also is a Distinguished Member of the U.S. National Wrestling Hall of Fame and an inductee in the International Wrestling Hall of Fame established by FILA, the international wrestling federation.

Kevin also had success as a mixed martial arts fighter in 1997 and 1998 in the Extreme Fighting, UFC, and Extreme Challenge organizations. He compiled a record of 4-2, including winning the UFC 14 middleweight tournament.

While remaining in his position as freestyle wrestling coach, he will be returning to the world of mixed martial arts, for this week at least, by serving as the interim coach of the Portland Wolfpack of the International Fight League (IFL). The Wolfpack take on the New York Pitbulls, coached by Renzo Gracie, this coming Friday, April 13, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Matt Lindland, the head coach of the Wolfpack, will be in Russia where he will be fighting heavyweight standout Fedor Emelianenko on the BodogFight pay-per-view show Saturday, April 14, so Kevin is filling in for him.

In our lengthy discussion, Kevin explains and elaborates upon why he is returning, if even briefly and as a coach, to mixed martial arts; his views on the IFL and its team concept; the inclusion of sombo and grappling, two styles of wrestling which include the use of submissions, in the programs of USA Wrestling and FILA; the relation between the wrestling and MMA communities; some highlights and controversies of the U.S. National Wrestling Championships, which were held this past weekend in Las Vegas; who are some of the top wrestling hopefuls for the 2007 World Championships and 2008 Olympics; the prospects of mixed martial arts ever becoming an Olympic sport; how he sees the Wolfpack-Pitbulls matchup going; and some interesting news about the Real Pro Wrestling organization.

SecondsOut Radio: Manny Pacquiao, Plus Lessons of Calzaghe-Manfredo and Clottey-Corrales Fights

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by offering some lessons, both positive and negative, highlighted by this past Saturday's fights between Joe Calzaghe and Peter Manfredo Jr., and Joshua Clottey and Diego Corrales. Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs), the top super middleweight fighter in the world, scored a one-sided, third-round TKO victory over Manfredo (26-4, 12 KOs) in front of a crowd reported at over 35,000 fans in Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, and shown in the U.S. on HBO. Clottey (31-2, 1 NC, 20 KOs) won a brutal ten-round welterweight battle by unanimous decision over Corrales (40-5, 33 KOs) in a fight from the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Missouri, and shown in the U.S. on Showtime.

We also preview the April 14 fight between 2006 Fighter of the Year Manny Pacquiao (43-3-2, 33 KOs) and Jorge Solis (32-0-2, 23 KOs), which takes place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and will be shown in the U.S. on pay-per-view television. We spoke with Manny Pacquiao on a media teleconference call about this fight and his plans.

It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, and listen, learn, and enjoy.
