SecondsOut Radio: De La Hoya-Mayweather Preview, Diaz-Freitas Recap
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman starts by discussing the significance of the victory this past Saturday, April 28, of the now-unified WBA and WBO lightweight champion Juan Diaz over Acelino Freitas. After Diaz wore down Freitas for eight rounds, Freitas did not answer the bell for the ninth. Diaz thus emerges as yet another bona fide star in the sport of boxing, and should be recognized as such.
We next preview what will undoubtedly be the biggest fight of the year, the May 5 showdown in Las Vegas between the WBC 154-pound champion, Oscar De La Hoya, and Floyd Mayweather Jr., widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing today.
We spoke with Shane Mosley, who holds two victories over De La Hoya, and who has been training with him for his fight with Mayweather. We spoke with Floyd Jr.'s trainer and uncle, Roger Mayweather, about what to expect in this fight. We spoke with Freddie Roach, De La Hoya's trainer, about his views on this fight. Plus, we got comments from the stars themselves, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya. In addition, we offer up a prediction, a rarity on this show.
