No Holds Barred: Fedor Emelianenko, King Mo, Rampage Jackson, Jon Slusser

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reports from Tuesday's Bellator MMA news conference at Madison Square Garden previewing the June 24 Bellator pay-per-view at MSG in New York. We also preview the main event of the Bellator 175 card, which takes place this Friday, March 31, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, a rematch between "King" Mo Lawal and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, which will also be shown live in the U.S. on Spike TV.

At the news conference, we spoke with the legend, the greatest MMA fighter of all time, Fedor Emelianenko. He fights former UFC brawler Matt Mitrione in the co-main event. We spoke with the 40-year-old Fedor about this fight and his plans.

Also at the news conference was Spike SVP Sports & Specials Jon Slusser. Viacom is the parent company of both Spike and Bellator, and we spoke with him about the future of both Bellator and the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) as Spike is rebranded and repositioned next year.

On the media conference call of March 22, we spoke with both "King" Mo and "Rampage" about their rematch this Friday.

And we open with a commentary on the state of MMA today, its history, and this Bellator pay-per-view.

No Holds Barred: Linares Shines, Two More Deaths of Boxers, TV Ups and Downs

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses this past Thursday's Golden Boy debut show on ESPN2, the preposterous scoring in the Jason Quigley-Glen Tapia fight, the tanking number of buys for HBO boxing pay-per-views such as the March 18 Golovkin-Jacobs card, Saturday's Jorge Linares-Anthony Crolla masterpiece, the despicable state of boxing announcing in the U.S., and what appears to be likely plans for a U.S. telecast of the April 29 Anthony Joshua-Wladimir Klitschko heavyweight title unification fight in London. We also have commentary on two deaths in the past week of boxers, and the innovative role of the community-based Arcaro Boxing Gym in Seattle, Washington.

No Holds Barred: The Real Problems Facing Boxing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the controversies arising from the scoring of this past Saturday's Gennady Golovkin-Danny Jacobs fight. But are disputed scoring and questionable judging at the heart of boxing's problems? In light of what is going on in the sports world, that is examined and analyzed.

No Holds Barred: Can the World Boxing Super Series Succeed?

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reports from kickoff news conference of the newly-created World Boxing Super Series, which was held March 9 in New York.

The basic format of this ambitious project is to have two annual 16-man tournaments in different weight classes to crown winners of the Muhammad Ali Trophy, which was made with the support of the family of the late heavyweight champion and worldwide sports icon. They aim not to supplant the various sanctioning bodies and promoters, but to add this new tournament to the existing events held around the world in boxing, and to create "the greatest prize in boxing". Half of the fights are planned for Europe with the other half for the U.S.

No fighters were at this news conference, nor were the specific weight classes for the inaugural tournament mentioned, although they do plan a drawing for the tournaments and seeding at an event planned for June, with the first fights in September of this year.

The fighters, they said, will be chosen from among the top 15-ranked fighters in the four major sanctioning bodies. Those much-criticized rankings include many different levels of fighters, but the World Boxing Super Series organizers are hopeful that the total of $50 million U.S. dollars to be awarded in prize money to the fighters, with as much as $1 million for winners of the quarterfinals, will be enough to attract all but a handful of top tier fighters who already make that or more. This will also require the cooperation of various promoters and managers, which has often proved difficult to impossible, but again their hope is that money talks.

The four speakers at this news conference were:

-- Matthew Hooper, executive vice president of Modern Times Group (MTG), which is a major shareholder in Comosa AG, which owns the World Boxing Super Series. MTG is a major digital entertainment company based in Sweden, and is involved in TV, radio, online networks, gambling, and eSports.

-- Roberto Dalmiglio, Comosa's Head of Management Board, and group commercial director at media rights company MP & Silva, which is handling media rights outside of Scandinavia and the U.S. MP & Silva manages the sports TV rights for about 10,000 hours of programming to some 500 broadcasters globally, including the FIFA World Cup rights, senior European football leagues, Grand Slam tennis, motor racing, and more.

-- Kalle Sauerland, Comosa's Chief Boxing Officer, who is also a major boxing promoter with Sauerland Promotion, based in Europe.

-- Richard Schaefer, Comosa's Chairman of the Americas, and a long-time boxing promoter and now the chairman and CEO of Ringstar Sports.

To discuss all this, we spoke at this news conference with Kalle Sauerland. We also present the complete audio from the news conference itself, and discuss the prospects for the World Boxing Super Series to succeed.

No Holds Barred: The Improbable Fates of Haye-Bellew and Thurman-Garcia

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the two main events which took place Saturday, March 4, and their improbable endings.

In the U.K., WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew scored a dramatic eleventh-round TKO over the heavy favorite David Haye in a heavyweight fight. Despite many expecting a quick knockout by Haye, Bellew acquitted himself well as the rounds went on. But Haye's right leg gave way in the sixth round and he could barely stand on it for the second half of the fight, before being knocked out of the ring by Bellew. The fight was built up by a series of vile and vulgar statements by Haye, but both men embraced after their battle and noted their respect for each other's courage. This fight took place in London's O2 Arena and was shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office.

In the U.S., the long awaited welterweight title unification fight between two unbeaten beltholders, WBA champ Keith Thurman and WBC champ Danny Garcia, took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and was shown live in the U.S. on CBS and in the U.K. on BoxNation. While Thurman won a split decision, which most observers said was a clearcut victory for him, the fight had few fireworks or dramatic moments. While the initial ratings indicate that it was the most-viewed fight on American television this year, the question arises whether or not this fight and broadcast will bring more fans back into boxing.

No Holds Barred: It's No Holds Barred Day!

It's No Holds Barred Day! To commemorate the eleventh anniversary of the first episode of this podcast, posted on March 6, 2006, here is a reposting in its entirety of that first episode. Here also is the original description of that show:

"No Holds Barred" Returns: Eddie Goldman interviews Frank Shamrock

It took longer than hoped for, but as promised, "No Holds Barred" is back.

From 1999 to 2001, five days a week, every week, the original "No Holds Barred" daily talk show ran live on the now-defunct eYada.com Internet radio network. We did 400 shows and over 1000 interviews on "No Holds Barred", and, according to figures provided to us from the eYada.com servers, had about 15,000 listeners a week. I was the host with my able producer Al Gattullo riding shotgun.

But in July 2001, eYada.com closed its doors. It was partially the victim of being somewhat ahead of its time, but also was slain by those who profited from keeping new forms of media in general and the Internet in particular from succeeding. Tellingly, in the almost five years since its demise, and despite the unchecked advance of all sorts of new technology, eYada.com has neither been revived nor replaced.

For myself as host, this put me on another journey in search of a suitable place and method of bringing the show back. As many know, I have recently started as host of an Internet radio boxing show called SecondsOut Radio.

Now after many months of planning and work, we are able to announce the return of "No Holds Barred".

This new incarnation of the show will have some important differences with the eYada.com version. That was a live show, webcast from the studios funded with the millions of dollars eYada.com had raised (and burnt through in two years). We have no such money tree, although we do have some great sponsors.

The old show, being live, was able to do up-to-date news. This show will be weekly and prerecorded, and thus will focus more on interviews and a talk format. Besides, there are numerous web sites posting news from the combat sports almost as fast as it happens.

But the new show will be the same in two key departments.

First, it will cover all the combat sports (although most of my boxing audio interviews will be done on SecondsOut Radio).

Second, this damn show will be, so long as I can be a host, NO HOLDS BARRED, telling it like it is, speaking truth to power, and leaving the baloney to those who butcher the truth, logic, facts, science, reason, and history in search of a dirty dollar.

On the first edition of the return of "No Holds Barred," we speak with former mixed martial arts fighter of the year Frank Shamrock. On Friday, March 10, in San Jose, Calif., after being out of the spotlight for several years, Frank returns to action to fight Cesar Gracie.

No Holds Barred: Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, and the Honor of Champions

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia about their welterweight title unification fight.

In addition, the issue of honor and the lack of honor of many boxing champions, including the potential implications of this past Saturday's postfight hotel lobby brawl involving Deontay Wilder, and the WBC's call for a boxing code of ethics to be implemented, are discussed.

WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (33-0, 19 KOs) fight this Saturday, March 4, in the main event of a card billed as Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS, presented by Premier Boxing Champions, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This card will be shown live in the U.S. on CBS and in the U.K. on BoxNation.

We spoke with both Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia on a recent media conference call.
