NO HOLDS BARRED: Gary Shaw on Vazquez-Marquez and Elite XC-CBS Deal

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this special edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Gary Shaw, who serves as a boxing promoter with his Gary Shaw Productions and as a mixed martial arts promoter as president of EliteXC.

We spoke Friday afternoon, Feb. 29, just before the weigh-ins for the highly anticipated rubber match between WBC super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez (42-4, 31 KOs) and former world champion Rafael Marquez (37-4, 33 KOs), who, in classic battles last year, split their first two fights. The third fight takes place Saturday, March 1, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Showtime will televise it in the U.S.

In a short but explosive interview, we discussed the significance of the deal announced Thursday, Feb. 28, that CBS will televise four live EliteXC shows a year in prime time; that the second Vazquez-Marquez fight narrowly lost in the voting by the Boxing Writers Association of America for 2007 fight of the year; why boxing could not get a network TV deal like EliteXC did; when and where the first CBS-televised EliteXC show might take place; an evaluation of EliteXC star Kimbo Slice as a fighter; and where EliteXC stands in relation to UFC.

    Questions for Dana White

I was contacted by a mainstream journalist Wednesday, Feb. 27, who is researching and writing an article on mixed martial arts.

Being somewhat familiar with the fact that I have long been a major critic of the current owners of the UFC, he asked me, since he would be interviewing UFC president Dana White, to prepare a list of questions for White. Those questions have been posted on the ADCC News.

I put together the list rather quickly, so if you have more questions or comments, you can post them here.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Oleg Taktarov, Matt Horwich, Justin Garcia, Richard Schaefer

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman starts a mostly mixed martial arts show by reporting the news announced Tuesday about the fight card for the debut show for the new YAMMA Pit Fighting mixed martial arts organization. That event takes place Friday, April 11, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be shown live on pay-per-view television.

The Boris Talis Cup Jiu Jitsu Team Competition was held February 21 at the historic Atlantic Oceana in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, New York. In that grappling event, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team Garcia, coached by Justin Garcia of the Jungle Gym in the Bronx, New York, defeated the Russian Sambo Team Taktarov, coached by former UFC champion Oleg Taktarov.

We spoke about the event right after it with both Justin Garcia and Oleg Taktarov. Besides discussing this event, we also spoke with Oleg about his movie career and his upcoming fight with Don Frye at the April 11 debut show of YAMMA Pit Fighting.

We spoke with IFL middleweight champion Matt Horwich, who defends his title this coming Friday, February 29, at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. His opponent will be former Iowa Hawkeye wrestler Ryan McGivern, who defeated Horwich when they first met in December 2006 by unanimous decision. This event will be telecast on HDNet.

Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, was in New York last week to announce the April 19 fight between two champions, light heavyweight king Bernard Hopkins and super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe. We spoke with him about this fight, and also about the plans of Golden Boy Promotions to enter the worlds of soccer (football) and mixed martial arts.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez 3 Preview, Wladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov Review

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman reviews one of the worst heavyweight fights in years, the title unification bout between Wladimir Klitschko (50-3, 44 KOs) and Sultan Ibragimov (22-1-1, 17 KOs), held February 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The IBF champion Klitschko won by unanimous decision also to capture the WBO title.

We provide a scathing review of it and analyze the significance of this enormously dull affair, which was roundly booed by the fans.

After the fight, we conducted interviews with Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, the Klitschkos' promotional company; Leon Margules of Seminole Warriors Boxing, which promotes Ibragimov; former world champion Vitali Klitschko about his plans to return to the ring; and promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank about whom middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will next face. We also have the audio from entire postfight news conference with Wladimir Klitschko and Sultan Ibragimov.

While these heavyweights sent them home booing or snoring, this coming Saturday, March 1, the final contest in one of boxing's most compelling recent trilogies will take place when WBC super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez (42-4, 31 KOs) faces former world champion Rafael Marquez (37-4, 33 KOs).

When these two first fought last March, that fight, won by Marquez by a seventh-round TKO, was an instant frontrunner for fight of the year – until their second fight last August. Vazquez gained revenge by winning with a sixth-round TKO in a fight so filled with action that it eclipsed even their first battle.

Now this Saturday these two will meet again, this time, like their first fight, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Showtime will televise it in the U.S.

We spoke with Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez on a recent media teleconference call. We also spoke with promoter Gary Shaw about the importance of this fight.

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman is joined by our correspondent Charles Farrell to introduce the new online journal of boxing, The Boxing Standard. Eddie and Charles are also the editors of The Boxing Standard.

In a lengthy discussion, we explain why we aim to stir up the highly mediocre world of boxing journalism. NO HOLDS BARRED: What They Dare Not Tell You

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman offers a timely and essential commentary on a number of major controversies in the combat sports.

The topics include a review of last Saturday's upset of Paul Williams by Carlos Quintana, the need for a Mayweather-Cotto fight, and this coming Saturday's rematch between Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor; the disastrous debut of Brock Lesnar in UFC, and how that company more and more positions itself similarly to the staged pro "wrestling"; the necessity of understanding real wrestling for understanding mixed martial arts; the purchase by the UFC owners of the assets of Pride even though that organization was well-known as being a front for the Yakuza, the Japanese mob, and the subsequent lawsuit by the main figures in Zuffa, UFC's parent company, against the former owners of Pride; the possibility that the growing number of controversies, lawsuits, and outrages committed by the UFC management could jeopardize their getting sanctioned in New York; why other mixed martial arts promoters should disassociate themselves from the UFC management and the direction they have taken; how most of what claims to be the mixed martial arts media miserably fails to cover these issues; and more.

SecondsOut Radio: Kelly Pavlik, Jermain Taylor, Ozell Nelson, More on Women's Boxing

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing some important fights of the past week. Discussed are the successful defense by Holly Holm of her IFBA welterweight title over Belinda Laracuente, the entertaining draw between Chevelle Hallback and Melissa Hernandez for the still-vacant IFBA lightweight title, and the surprising upset by Carlos Quintana over the previously-unbeaten Paul Williams by unanimous decision to capture his WBO welterweight title.

We next focus on a highly-anticipated rematch coming up this Saturday, February 16, in Las Vegas. When Jermain Taylor, then undefeated and the middleweight champion of the world, first fought Kelly Pavlik last Sept. 29 in Atlantic City, he was a clear favorite going into that bout. Taylor hurt and dropped Pavlik in the second round of that fight, but could not finish him. Pavlik regrouped and went on to drop, and stop, Taylor in the seventh round, winning the fight and the title with a thunderous TKO.

Now the rematch is at hand, although it will be at a catch weight of 166 pounds and not for the middleweight title. Still, the legacy of both men is on the line, and the future of their careers will be in large part determined by the outcome of this fight, as they each vow to be the decisive winner this time out.

At a prefight news conference in New York, we spoke with the middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs) about this rematch. We spoke with Jermain Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs) on a media teleconference call about his approach to this fight. And we spoke with Taylor's trainer, Ozell Nelson, about what changes their team plans to make in this rematch with Pavlik, and about Taylor's engaging manner. This fight will be telecast in the U.S. on HBO Pay-Per-View.

It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the award-winning boxing writer, and our correspondent on this show, Charles Farrell.

Our main subject in this lengthy discussion is the bountiful schedule for boxing over the next few months.

Among the fights we discuss are the February 9 welterweight fight between Paul Williams and Carlos Quintana; the February 16 rematch between Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor, plus the junior bantamweight fights of Fernando Montiel vs. Martin Castillo and Cristian Mijares vs. Jose Navarro; the February 23 heavyweight unification fight between IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko and WBO champ Sultan Ibragimov; the March 1 rubber match between junior featherweights Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, whose two battles last year are leading candidates for 2007 fight of the year; the March 8 card featuring the long-delayed WBC heavyweight title fight between Oleg Maskaev and Samuel Peter, along with lightweight champ Juan Diaz vs. Nate Campbell and heavyweights John Ruiz and Jameel McCline; the March 8 cruiserweight title fight between David Haye and Enzo Maccarinelli; the March 15 rematch between super featherweights Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez; the March 22 fight between lightweights Joel Casamayor and Michael Katsidis; the April 12 rematch between welterweights Antonio Margarito and Kermit Cintron; the April 19 fight between Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins; and more.

Towards the end of this discussion, we also take aim at the less-than-mediocre quality of boxing journalism, especially in the U.S.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Bob Meyrowitz and YAMMA Pit Fighting

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Bob Meyrowitz, whose new mixed martial arts league, YAMMA Pit Fighting (YPF), will be debuting Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with a pay-per-view show. Bob is the former CEO of Semaphore Entertainment Group, which produced the original, classic UFC events from 1993 to 2001.

Among the topics Bob discussed were the format of tournaments and masters super fights which will be used in this organization; incorrect speculation about their new fighting surface; how they plan to persuade viewers to buy their pay-per-views; the lack of understanding by many of the early, classic UFC events; his opinion of the present-day UFC and the quality of their fighters; some of the newer MMA organizations; the need to produce stars; the reasoning behind and history of the marketing strategy of the early UFC’s, including the use of humor; how a pro boxer would do in MMA; the relation of the early UFC’s to various state athletic commissions; the experience with the New York commission and politicians in 1996 and 1997; the importance of ring girls; and more.

SecondsOut Radio: Suszannah Warner, Alicia Ashley, Ronica Jeffrey, Jill Diamond, and Women's Boxing

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman focuses on the state of women's boxing.

We spoke with NABF strawweight champion Suszannah Warner (8-6, 2 KOs), who won a four-round unanimous decision in a non-title fight over the previously-unbeaten Becky Garcia (5-1, 3 KOs), Friday, Feb. 1, at the Fort McDowell Casino in Fountain Hills, Arizona.

There were two women's fights on Star Boxing's "Punchin' at the Paradise 8" card at the Utopia Paradise Theater in the Bronx, New York, which was held Thursday, Jan. 31. Right after her fight, we spoke with Alicia Ashley (14-7-1, 1 KO), who won an eight-round unanimous decision on that card over Brooke Dierdorff (4-2-1, 3 KOs) to win the vacant NABF women's super bantamweight title. We also spoke with former New York City Golden Gloves champion, super bantamweight Ronica Jeffrey, who won her pro debut, also on that card, with a four-round unanimous decision over Karen Dulin, also making her pro debut. And we spoke with Jill Diamond, NABF Women's Division Chair, a member of the WBC Championship Committee, and the World Boxing Cares Chair, about the state of women's boxing today.

It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, and listen, learn, and enjoy.
