NO HOLDS BARRED: Antonio Tarver, Vernon Forrest, Nonito Donaire, Lou DiBella, Andrey Tsurkan, Yuri Foreman

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews two important boxing cards coming up in the next several days, and takes on the issue of comparing boxing and mixed martial arts. We also answer some compelling e-mails.

We begin by speaking with boxing promoter Lou DiBella about the decline of boxing in the U.S. and the relationship – or non-relationship – of that decline to the growth of mixed martial arts. His commentary is explosive and controversial about both these sports.

DiBella is joining forces with Bob Arum's Top Rank and Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing to co-promote a show Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Utopia Paradise Theater in the Bronx, NY. Headlining that card will be a fight between NABF 154-pound titleholder Andrey Tsurkan (25-2, 16 KOs), born in Ukraine and living in the Bronx, and undefeated challenger Yuri Foreman (23-0, 8 KOs), born in Belarus and living in Brooklyn. The winner improves his chances at getting a shot at the WBC title in that weight, presently held by Vernon Forrest. This fight will be televised live in the U.S. on Versus.

We spoke with both Andrey Tsurkan and Yuri Foreman as well as Lou DiBella at a New York news conference Wednesday.

This coming Saturday, December 1, Vernon Forrest will be co-featured on a major card at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, and televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

On that show, former world light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (25-4, 18 KOs) takes on journeyman Danny Santiago (29-3-1, 19 KOs); WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest (39-2, 28 KOs) faces former IBF world welterweight champion Michele Piccirillo (48-3, 30 KOs); and IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (18-1, 11 KOs) fights veteran Luis Maldonado (37-1-1, 28 KOs).

We spoke with Antonio Tarver, Vernon Forrest, and Nonito Donaire at a New York news conference Tuesday to get their takes on these fights.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Larry Hazzard, Bernard Hopkins

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman discusses the latest outrage in the combat sports: The firing of Larry Hazzard Sr., who had been the commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, which regulates combat sports, for almost 22 years.

We discuss his firing, as well as his place in both boxing and mixed martial arts. Simply put, without Larry Hazzard's role in developing the unified rules of MMA and having MMA sanctioned in New Jersey in 2000, that sport would not have been anywhere near as developed as it is today in the U.S. – if even it would have existed.

His firing, which took place Wednesday, Nov. 14, came in the wake of a letter being sent on his behalf by attorney James Binns to New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine alleging numerous charges of “malfeasance” against officials regulating boxing and mixed martial arts events in New Jersey. Among the many bombshells in this letter, dated Oct. 23, 2007, included citing an official for allegedly “failing to suspend a combatant who tested non-negative for HIV”; “allowing MMA promoters to deviate from sanction protocols”; “permitting contestants to compete without submitting required medical documents”; and “accepting a CT Scan that revealed marked brain impairment (Stephan Johnson)”. Johnson died on Dec. 5, 1999, from injuries suffered in a fight in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Nov. 20, 1999, in which he was knocked out in the tenth round.

Instead of investigating these serious charges, the New Jersey politicians dismissed Larry Hazzard.

Larry Hazzard was in Atlantic City this past Saturday night, Nov. 17, for the Joan Guzman-Humberto Soto fight at the Borgata Casino, but only as a spectator. Before taking his first-row seat, he held an informal news conference with several members of the boxing media. He also then continued to answer more media questions right after that. We have both discussions for you on this show.

Among the many people who expressed their outrage at this firing and protested it was Bernard Hopkins, the light heavyweight boxing champion of the world, and the president of Golden Boy East, the lead promoter of the Guzman-Soto card. He spoke with the media as well, and we also have that discussion for you.

SecondsOut Radio: Larry Hazzard, Fernando Vargas, Ricardo Mayorga, Kermit Cintron, Jesse Feliciano

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the unanimous decision victory this past Saturday, November 17, by undefeated WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) over Humberto Soto (43-6-2, 27 KOs) at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, N.J.

We next discuss the situation involving Larry Hazzard Sr., who, until this past Wednesday, had been the commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, which regulates combat sports, for almost 22 years. He had leveled numerous charges of alleged “malfeasance” against officials regulating boxing and mixed martial arts events in New Jersey in a letter to New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine by James Binns, his attorney, written on his behalf. Now, after establishing New Jersey as a leader in the fight for fighter health and safety in boxing's often suspect regulatory world, he is out as commissioner. This move by New Jersey officials has resulted in an outraged reaction by many in the combat sports world.

Next, we preview the fight slated for the Friday, Nov. 23, between veterans Fernando Vargas (26-4, 22 KOs) and Ricardo Mayorga (27-6-1, 22 KOs). This takes place in the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime pay-per-view. We also spoke with IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron and Jesse Feliciano, who fight in a co-feature.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Joan Guzman, Humberto Soto, Joey Reynolds

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman offers a preview of what many consider to be a potential fight of the year candidate.

This coming Saturday, Nov. 17, the undefeated WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman (27-0, 17 KOs) takes on the hard-hitting Humberto Soto (43-5-2, 27 KOs) at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, N.J. This fight will be shown live in the U.S. on HBO's Boxing After Dark after the replay of last week's memorable battle between Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley.

The crafty Guzman has been inactive for almost a year because of an injury to his left hand, while Soto has stopped every opponent he has faced in the last two years. Despite acclaimed boxing skills, both men have languished outside of the main spotlight of boxing, reserved for fighters with more well-known names who have received bigger pushes from their promoters and networks. Now it is time for either Guzman or Soto to try to advance to that next level of notoriety in this HBO main event.

We spoke with both Joan Guzman and Humberto Soto at a New York prefight news conference Wednesday to let them each state his case why he thinks he will win this crucial fight.

Later that evening, I was once again a guest on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show".

We play the segment where Joey and I discuss boxing. We discussed the Cotto-Mosley fight, as well as criticisms of the media seating at that fight where many long-time members of the media were relegated to faraway auxiliary seats or left to watch the fight on a TV in the media room, while ringside seats in the media section were given to fans who were obviously not journalists of any sort. Expect to hear more about this controversy, hopefully soon.

The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at midnight EST and runs to 5 AM EST.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Todd Hester on the First UFC

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Todd Hester, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Gladiator Magazine, and our correspondent on this show.

Todd covered the first edition of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which was held 14 years ago, on November 12, 1993, in Denver, Colorado. We discuss what the significance was of that event for the combat sports, how it showcased Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and emphasized technique, and the subsequent dumbing down of the UFC in recent years. We also stress that technique in general and submissions in particular need to be emphasized to make these types of events special again.

SecondsOut Radio: Shane Mosley, Jack Mosley, Joel Casamayor, Calzaghe-Kessler and Marquez-Juarez Reviews

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing this past Saturday's unanimous decision victories by Joe Calzaghe (44-0, 32 KOs) over Mikkel Kessler (39-1, 29 KOs) to unify three super middleweight belts, and by WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KOs) over Rocky Juarez (27-4, 19 KOs). With these superb performances, both Calzaghe and Marquez have to be considered as candidates for 2007 Fighter of the Year.

Next, we preview the big card coming up this Saturday, November 10, at Madison Square Garden in New York, to be shown on HBO Pay-Per-View in the U.S.

On that card will be the showdown between the undefeated WBA welterweight champion, Miguel Cotto (30-0, 25 KOs), and the former world champion, Shane Mosley (44-4, 37 KOs). As a co-feature, lightweight champion Joel Casamayor (34-3-1, 21 KOs) takes on Jose Armando Santa Cruz (25-2, 14 KOs).

We spoke with Shane Mosley and his trainer and father, Jack Mosley, about what they see happening in the fight with Cotto. We also spoke with Joel Casamayor about what he expects to happen in his fight with Santa Cruz.

It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, and listen, learn, and enjoy.
