NO HOLDS BARRED: Stephen Quadros, Rory Markham, Kurt Otto, and Richard Pound

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this packed edition of NO HOLDS BARRED -- the second this week -- host Eddie Goldman conducts a series of interviews to preview the much-anticipated International Fight League (IFL) mixed martial arts card to be held this Saturday, September 23, at The Mark of the Quad Cities in Moline, Ill. We also discuss some of the controversies and scandals raging in the combat sports.

Our main and lengthiest interview is with "The Fight Professor", Stephen Quadros. Along with Bas Rutten, Stephen will handle the television broadcast duties for the IFL's telecasts on Fox Sports Net, which return starting this Sunday, September 24. He is a longtime martial artist, announcer, actor, and musician. We preview Saturday's IFL card, including both the team competition and the superfight between Pat Miletich and Renzo Gracie. We also discuss the prospects for the IFL as it begins to expand its operations both this year, which is its first, and next. Stephen also has his own web site and page on MySpace.com.

We speak with IFL fighter Rory Markham of Pat Miletich's team, the Silverbacks, who faces Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Marcelo Dos Santos of Renzo Gracie's Pitbulls in a welterweight fight, which is part of the IFL's World Team Championships competition this Saturday. Markham has scored knockout victories in his first two IFL appearances. And we speak with IFL commissioner and co-founder Kurt Otto about how IFL is dealing with a controversy involving one fighter who had been scheduled to compete in this event in another team competition, Brian Ebersole of the Razorclaws. Both Markham and Otto were on an IFL media teleconference call.

On a more somber note, the use of steroids and other banned "performance-enhancing" substances has grown to near-epidemic proportions in the world of sports. Among those leading the fight against such dope-cheating is Richard Pound, President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Yet in mixed martial arts, boxing, and other professional combat sports, there still is no uniform policy for testing for doping, and no compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code. On an international media teleconference call last week, we speak with Richard Pound about these issues.

SecondsOut Radio: John Duddy, Yory Boy Campas, Richard Pound

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews a fight which promises to be the toughest test yet for a rising and undefeated fighter who is emerging as one of the most popular in his adopted home of New York. Also discussed are the excellent fights on this past Saturday night's pay-per-view, and the busy week ahead in New York boxing, including the Broadway Boxing card on Wed., Sept. 20, at the Manhattan Center, featuring in separate bouts junior welterweight prospects Edgar Santana (18-2, 12 KOs) and Dmitriy Salita (25-0-1, 15 KOs), who were guests on this show in recent weeks.

On Friday night, September 29, middleweight John Duddy (17-0, 15 KOs), originally from Derry, Ireland, will take another step up the ladder when he fights the veteran former world champion, Luis "Yory Boy" Campas (88-8, 72 KOs), from Navajoa, Mexico. This will be the main event on a card to be held at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. Duddy's previous appearance at the Theater, on March 16 of this year, the night before St. Patrick's Day, was before an adoring, packed house.

We spoke with both John Duddy and Yory Boy Campas at a recent prefight news conference at Jack Demsey's restaurant and bar in New York.
