On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman interviews that unique boxing promoter, Don King, and plays an extended excerpt from his Sept. 18 New York news conference, which was, as usual, one of his patented marathon performances.
King was in New York to hype the Nov. 4 fight between WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich (23-1, 14 KOs) and former linear heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs (47-4-1, 41 KOs). This fight, Liakhovich's first title defense since winning that belt from Lamon Brewster April 1 of this year, will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, at Chase Field, the home of baseball's Diamondbacks, and be shown in the U.S. on Showtime.
Besides merely informing the media that this fight is on, King went to great lengths to demonstrate that, with four different fighters holding the four major heavyweight belts, in his view, "Sergei Liakhovich is the top world champion in boxing today." At that Sept. 18 news conference at Gallagher's Steak House in Manhattan, King thus made his usual lengthy presentation, complete with video clips highlighting both his version of the history of boxing's heavyweight division since the early 1970's, the fall of the Soviet bloc, and why Liakhovich, the man who beat Brewster who had beaten Wladimir Klitschko, is the top heavyweight today.
If you have never attended or heard Don King in action at one of what are essentially his one-man shows, now you can right here.
We first have an interview with King right after the news conference. We then run the most essential part from that news conference. And, as always, we add our own NO HOLDS BARRED commentary.
