No Holds Barred: Jeff Monson and the Future of Grappling

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on DojoRadio.com

  • On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by noting the untimely passing of mixed martial arts fighter Evan Tanner. We also discuss the rescheduling of the Affliction mixed martial arts card and what this says about their marketing, advertising, and pay-per-view strategies. And we comment upon the possible entry into mixed martial arts of boxing promoter Don King.

This coming weekend, September 13-14, the USA Grappling World Team Trials will take place at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif. This event is organized by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for the sport of wrestling. This is a qualifying event for the 2008 Grappling World Championships, which will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland, December 20-21.

Jeff Monson is an athlete known for his success in both grappling and mixed martial arts. A former ADCC submission wrestling world champion, and Pride and UFC veteran, he was both a world and U.S. champion in grappling in 2007. He will be competing at the Grappling World Team Trials this weekend in hopes of repeating.

We conducted a lengthy interview this Wednesday with Jeff Monson, discussing grappling, its future, how he compares grappling and fighting, his career, and more.

No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell on Boxing This Week, UFC, and More

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on DojoRadio.com

  • On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman is joined by our correspondent, the award-winning boxing writer Charles Farrell. Eddie and Charles are also the editors of The Boxing Standard.

In a lengthy, candid, and animated discussion about fights this past weekend and those scheduled for next weekend, we comment on the knockout loss of Chuck Liddell by Rashad Evans at UFC 88 and what it says about mixed martial arts fighters and MMA, the 54-second knockout of British lightweight boxer Amir Khan by little-known Breidis Prescott and what it says about both fighters, the victory of former lightweight champion Juan Diaz over Michael Katsidis, the much-anticipated Joel Casamayor-Juan Manuel Marquez and Nate Campbell-Joan Guzman lightweight title bouts, the prevailing anti-technology culture in boxing, and more.

    SecondsOut Radio: Casamayor-Marquez, Campbell-Guzman, Mora-Forrest 2, Bradley-Cherry

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews the appealing quartet of major title fights which are coming up this Saturday, September 13, and discusses boxing's talent-rich lightweight division.

On that date, WBA, WBO, and IBF lightweight champion Nate Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs) will defend his belts against Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) in Biloxi, Mississippi. This fight will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime.

Also on that date, the linear lightweight champion, Joel Casamayor (36-3-1, 22 KOs), will defend his title against Juan Manuel Marquez (48-4-1, 35 KOs) in Las Vegas, Nevada. This fight will be shown in the U.S. on HBO pay-per-view.

The co-feature on the HBO pay-per-view is the rematch between WBC super welterweight champion Sergio Mora (21-0-1, 5 KOs) and Vernon Forrest (40-3, 29 KOs).

The co-feature on the Showtime telecast is the first defense of his belt by WBC super lightweight champion Timothy Bradley (22-0, 11 KOs), who fights Edner Cherry (24-5-2, 12 KOs).

This should be an exciting, important, and highly entertaining weekend of fights.

On a series of media conference calls, we had a chance to ask questions of all these eight fighters and let them speak for themselves: Nate Campbell and Joan Guzman, Joel Casamayor and Juan Manuel Marquez, Sergio Mora and Vernon Forrest, and Timothy Bradley and Edner Cherry.

It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, and listen, learn, and enjoy.
