Robin Thede Segment on Russian Trolls Makes 10 Best Late-Night Moments of 2017 List

by Eddie Goldman

I am proud to note that the segment in which I was interviewed for BET's "The Rundown with Robin Thede" about the Russian troll operation known as "Black Fist" has been named one of "The 10 Best Late-Night Moments of 2017" on U.S. TV by Vulture, the culture and entertainment site from New York magazine.

"The Rundown with Robin Thede", which just started airing in October, has also made numerous lists for being among the best new late-night TV shows and the overall best new TV shows of the year. And it won the always-prestigious 2017 No Holds Barred Award for Best U.S. TV Show.

You can read that article here.

Saturday Is For Real Boxing

by Eddie Goldman

For those folks interested in real boxing who are fortunate enough to be spared from all this devastation and tragedy going on around the world, Saturday, September 9, is a busy day.

The World Boxing Super Series has its first card Saturday, featuring the current WBO cruiserweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk, against a former champion, Marko Huck. This fight, the opening round of this event's eight-man cruiserweight tournament, takes place at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin.

While the World Boxing Super Series just recently signed TV deals with networks in several European countries, including Germany and Russia, this fight will not be televised live in the U.K. or at all in the U.S.

The U.S. will host one of the strongest cards of the year, however, as three major fights in the talented super flyweight division take place at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Headlining this card, which has been dubbed "SuperFly", will be a rematch of a March fight between Wisaksil Wangek AKA Srisaket Sor Rungvisai of Thailand and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez of Nicaragua. In their first fight, Rungvisai won a controversial majority decision, handing Chocolatito his first loss and capturing his WBC belt. In a battle of two exciting Mexican fighters, former WBA 108-pound champion Juan Francisco Estrada will face Carlos Cuadras, with the winner likely getting a title shot at the Rungvisai-Chocolatito victor. This fight could also be a show stealer. And in his first fight outside his home country, the unbeaten 24-year-old phenom Naoya Inoue of Japan will defend his WBO belt against American Antonio Nieves.

The "SuperFly" card will be shown on HBO in the U.S., WOWOW in Japan, and Sky Sports in the U.K.

I have already discussed these cards and other topics more in depth, including the TV situation, here:

So please be safe, and watch as many of these fights as you can. And remember, Mens sana in corpore sano.

Joshua-Pulev, Golovkin-Canelo, World Boxing Super Series, Parker-Fury TV News

by Eddie Goldman

As a follow-up to my latest show, "No Holds Barred: A Sweet But Dysfunctional September for Boxing", which was posted early Monday, September 4, as anticipated there has been a flurry of announcements Tuesday, September 5. Most of these seem to be quite late in coming.

One of the worst kept secrets in boxing was that on Saturday, October 28, heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will defend his belts against his IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev. That fight has now been officially announced. Joshua had wanted to have a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko, whom he defeated on April 29 in a classic fight by 11th-round TKO, but the 41-year-old Klitschko decided to retire instead.

The Joshua-Pulev fight will take place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, and will be shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office. Joshua is also contracted to fight on Showtime in the U.S. There was no accompanying announcement about this, so we shall see if they show this fight, and either live or on tape-delay.

While the September 16 Golovkin-Canelo fight was long ago announced as being shown on HBO pay-per-view in the U.S., details of how to watch it in the U.K. on BoxNation have just come out.

From BoxNation:

"'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on September 16th is exclusively live in the U.K. and Ireland on BoxNation Box Office from just £16.95/€21.95.

"BoxNation's current paying subscribers, and any new customers that wish to subscribe instead of buying it via Box Office, will get the fight as part of their monthly subscription at no extra cost."

The World Boxing Super Series has finally announced a U.K. TV deal, just four days before their first card takes place. These fights will be on ITV, both free-to-air and pay-per-view. But there still is no word on if they will get a TV deal in the U.S.

From the World Boxing Super Series press release:

"MP & Silva are delighted to announce a media rights agreement with ITV to showcase the inaugural 2017/18 season of the World Boxing Super Series starting September 9. ITV will exclusively cover 16 elite boxers competing across 14 different Fight Nights all over the world to see who will claim the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

"The Super Middleweight and Cruiserweight tournaments will be shown on a combination of ITV's free-to-air and pay-per-view platforms with the second Quarter-Final Fight Night featuring Callum Smith vs. Erik Skoglund from Liverpool's Echo Arena to be shown live on ITV4 on September 16.

"The World Boxing Super Series will be of more particular interest to the British audience this season with Chris Eubank Jr. fighting Turkish Avni Yildirim and the all British duel between George Groves and Jamie Cox at The SSE Arena, Wembley in October both being shown on ITV Box Office."

And in an announcement which already has earned the wrath of many fans online, the September 23 fight between WBO heavyweight champ Joseph Parker and Hughie Fury in Manchester, U.K., will be shown in the U.K. and Ireland as a YouTube pay-per-view. Again, there has been no announcement about showing this fight in the U.S.

From the Hennessy Sports press release:

"The blockbuster WBO World Heavyweight Championship title fight between Joseph Parker and Hughie Fury on Saturday 23rd September at the Manchester Arena will be shown exclusively live in the UK and Ireland on YouTube (www.youtube.com/parkerfury) on a pay-per-view basis with further countries to be announced shortly.

"A portion of the undercard will also be streamed for free before the big fight, this is also available live on www.youtube.com/parkerfury. Watch this event anywhere online or on your smart TV, game console, PC, Mac, mobile, tablet and more for a special advance purchase offer price of only £9.99 in the UK and €11.99 in the Republic of Ireland until midnight on Sunday 17th September.*

"youtube.com/parkerfury is the home of Hennessy Sports YouTube Channel which is called The Boxing Channel presented by Hennessy Sports.

"*£14.99 in the UK and €16.99 in the R.O.I from Monday 18th September."

Overall this still seems like a pretty dysfunctional way to get fans to watch boxing. All this reliance on pay-per-view is far inferior to how most other major sports popularize their events through free TV and streaming.

No Holds Barred: Mikey Garcia, TV Star

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses Saturday's Mikey Garcia-Adrien Broner fight, and how Mikey Garcia's lopsided unanimous decision victory, as well as the impressive TV ratings for this show, make it clear that he is a major star in boxing and a TV draw.

We also discuss why boxing must be primarily viewed as a TV sport, some of the history of how Mikey Garcia arrived at this point in his career, several of the other important fights held this past weekend, what should be next for Mikey Garcia, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Kell Brook, Errol Spence Jr., Benavidez-Medina Fight of the Night

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook and unbeaten challenger Errol Spence Jr., who fight this Saturday, May 27. We also comment on this past Saturday's full day of fights, and why the David Benavidez-Rogelio "Porky" Medina fight deserved the honor of being known as the televised fight of the night.

Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) and Spence (21-0, 18 KOs) face each other in the main event of a card at the Bramall Lane football stadium in Sheffield, U.K., which will be shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office and live in the U.S. on Showtime. The winner will likely be regarded as the top fighter in the talent-rich welterweight division.

We spoke with both Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr. on a recent media conference call, in which they both promised victory.

This past Saturday, May 20, there were several important fights around the world. Gervonta Davis, Gary Russell Jr., and the masterful Terence Crawford all had dominating performances to retain their respective belts. There was also a disgraceful robbery, in which Rances Barthelemy was given a gift and undeserved decision win over Kiryl Relikh, and a riot in and outside the ring following Jose Uzcategui's disqualification loss against Andre Dirrell after he hit him after the bell sounded in the eighth round and Dirrell could not continue.

The high point of the night took place in the main event of a PBC card on FS1 which many may have passed up hoping that for a change HBO, which had its telecast on at the same time, would present something noteworthy.

The PBC on FS1 card was headlined by what turned out to be an eight-round, non-stop battle between budding star, the 20-year-old David Benadivez, and veteran Rogelio "Porky" Medina, who many remember last year gave IBF super middleweight champ James DeGale all he could handle. For Benavidez, this was his toughest opponent yet, and in what was billed as a 168-pound title eliminator, he established himself as both a legitimate contender and a must-see fighter.

We discussed why the Benavidez-Medina fight was fight of the night, the need for this fight to be replayed both on TV and online, the need for PBC to set up its own online video service showing full fights, how HBO and his promoters have completely botched the marketing and promotion of Terence Crawford, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Gervonta Davis, Liam Walsh, Boxing TV Notes

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with unbeaten fighters Gervonta Davis and Liam Walsh, who face each other Saturday, May 20, and discussed the current situation regarding boxing on TV in the U.S.

Making the first defense of his IBF 130-pound belt, the 22-year-old Gervonta Davis (17-0, 16 KOs) hits the road to face 31-year-old British challenger Liam Walsh (21-0, 14 KOs) at London's Copper Box Arena, the site of the 2012 Olympic boxing. This fight will be shown live in the U.K. on BT Sport on BoxNation, and live in the U.S. on Showtime.

We spoke with both Gervonta Davis and Liam Walsh on their recent media conference call, in which both fighters confidently but respectfully predicted victory.

May 20 is a busy day for boxing, as BoxNation, Showtime, HBO, and the PBC on FS1 will also have more televised fights.

We discussed the ongoing decline of HBO's boxing program, the growth of Showtime's boxing program including its schedule of international fights such as Davis-Walsh, what might happen television-wise if there is a Joshua-Klitschko rematch, and much more.

No Holds Barred: The Return of PBC, America's Number One Boxing TV Series

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the Lara-Foreman and DeGale-Jack fights coming up this weekend, and discusses why the Premier Boxing Champion, the PBC, is by far America's number one boxing TV series.

On Friday, January 13, WBA 154-pound champ Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) takes on Yuri Foreman (34-2, 10 KOs), and Anthony Dirrell (29-1-1, 23 KOs) fights Norbert Nemesapati (24-4, 17 KOs). This PBC card takes place at the Hialeah Park Racing and Casino in Miami, Florida, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Spike TV. Also on the card, two undefeated welterweights with identical 13-0 records, Miguel Cruz and Alex Martin, face each other in a bout that may be shown on TV.

On Saturday, January 14, IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale (23-1, 14 KOs) faces WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack (20-1-2, 12 KOs) in a title unification bout. The co-feature has two unbeaten fighters fighting each others, IBF junior lightweight champion Jose Pedraza (22-0, 12 KOs) and Gervonta Davis (16-0, 15 KOs). This card will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime and in the U.K. on Sky Sports.

We spoke with James DeGale and Badou Jack on a recent media conference call.

We open with a discussion about why boxing is a primarily TV sport, and how all the shills, propagandists, nitwits, incompetents, and zombies writing in boxing's multitude of fake news sites have missed or failed to report one of the top boxing stories in the U.S. for 2016: the PBC is by far America's number one boxing TV series.

Here, based on compiling TV ratings from Nielsen, are the most-watched boxing shows in the U.S. for 2016:

1 - Errol Spence Jr. vs. Leonard Bundu, Aug. 21, 2016, PBC on NBC: average 4.8 million viewers, peak of 6.34 million.

2 - Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter, June 25, 2016, Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS presented by Premier Boxing Champions: averaged 3.1 million viewers, peaked at 3.94 million viewers.

3 - Danny Garcia vs. Robert Guerrero, Jan. 23, 2016, PBC on Fox: ave. 2.1 million, main event peaked at 3.5 million viewers.

4 - Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz, April 30, 2016, PBC on Fox: 1.6 million viewers.

5 (tie) - Gennady Golovkin vs. Dominic Wade, April 23, 2016, HBO: 1,325,000 viewers. (Note also that Wade is a PBC boxer and is managed by Al Haymon.)

5 (tie) - Joe Smith Jr. vs. Andrzej Fonfara, June 18, 2016, PBC on NBC: 1.32 million.

And for 2017, the PBC has said, beginning with this January 13 card, they will have more shows than in either of their first two seasons.

2015 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships TV Ratings

Here are the Nielsen Ratings for all six sessions of the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships. Note that neither prime time telecast on Friday or Saturday on ESPN made the top 100 cable shows among adults 18-49 for the whole day. I assume ESPN will soon release the numbers for the ESPN3 webcast.

These numbers are not terrible, but appear to be flat and stagnant. Friday's semis did about the same as a repeat of the Berto-Lopez boxing on Spike, a weaker network than ESPN. Friday's numbers on ESPN are also about the same as ESPN gets for a regular weekly telecast of Friday Night Fights, which is being cancelled in May.

UFC, which claims to support wrestling, once again ran a show in direct competition with the NCAA finals. Their UFC Fight Night on Fox Sports 1, also a weaker network than ESPN, started at 10 PM EDT, right as the last several matches were taking place, including Logan Stieber's fourth straight title win. Their show averaged 617,000 viewers, a little less than the NCAAs, but got a 0.3 adults 18-49 rating because it ran later than the NCAAs.

Here are the numbers from the Sports TV Ratings site (http://sportstvratings.com), with some info added from TV By the Numbers (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com):
