No Holds Barred: Jake Shannon on Catch Wrestling in 2016

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling.

We spoke with him by phone Wednesday.

2016 promises to be another year of advancement for the reviving sport of catch wrestling, with Scientific Wrestling and other groups already scheduling numerous events, training camps, and seminars. But the sport is still small and lacks strong organizations.

We discussed how to deal with this, and how also to prevent the type of corruption that is plaguing much of world sport today.

With these types of problems in mind, Jake Shannon said, "I've tried to treat catch wrestling as more of an open-source kind of endeavor by just letting anybody contribute, trying to keep everybody honest, trying to keep everybody upright, upbeat, and focused on the goal of promoting catch wrestling as a sport and participating and putting on events and things of that nature."

He continued, "My view is keeping the model kind of open-source, distributed, a loose federation of people all working together with like-minded goals and keeping each other honest, and that kind of stuff."

There were many highlights in 2015 for catch wrestling, most notably the match between the two-time East Coast King of Catch Wrestling, Thomas Velasquez, and the West Coast King of Catch, Travis Newaza, for the 2015 North American Heavyweight King of Catch championship. This match was won by Thomas Velasquez two falls to one, getting two pins after being submitted in the first fall. It took place December 12, 2015, at the North American Catch Wrestling Association event at the MMA World Expo in New York, and was the top catch wrestling match in 2015 (with video hopefully coming soon).

"If there is anything for me personally that marks catch wrestling in 2015, was everybody kind of just started to focus on moving forward," said Jake Shannon. "I'm hoping we can take that leverage into 2016 and really showcase the sport to everybody."

We also discussed the pressing need for catch wrestling to get good sources of funds and revenue; the important role of catch wrestling coaches like Josh Barnett and Wade Schalles, who will be conducting a series of training camps this year; how catch wrestling's rules of winning by pin or submission makes it attractive both to fans and to athletes from all grappling and wrestling styles and disciplines; the importance of the upcoming catch wrestling event in July in Humboldt, Iowa, which is Frank Gotch's hometown; and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Jake Shannon on Catch Wrestling in 2015

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling.

2014 saw the greatest number of catch wrestling tournaments, events, seminars, and wrestlers participating in them all around the world, in the 21st century. Jake foresaw this when he declared on this show this past January: "It's a springtime for catch wrestling right now."

To review 2014 and discuss what to expect and needs to be done in catch wrestling for 2015 and beyond, we spoke with Jake Shannon by phone Monday.

"I call it a revolution," he said of catch wrestling's recent growth. He called it "a complete revolution, 360 degrees, that here we are, back again, with catch wrestling getting some respect."

We discussed the first catch wrestling tournament for 2015: the West Coast King of Catch Wrestling Tournament and No Gi Submission Only Grappling Tournament.

This event takes place Sunday, January 11, 2015, at San Ysidro High School at 5353 Airway Road, San Diego, California 92154.

We also discussed the historical importance of catch wrestling reviving as a sport in itself, why 2014 was a remarkable year for it, how the style vs. style format continues to capture people's imagination, how to utilize the catch wrestling vs. jiu-jitsu rivalry, why most catch wrestling matches end by pin, the appeal of catch wrestling for high school and college wrestlers, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Wade Schalles and Jake Shannon on Why Catch Wrestling Is Hot

Wade Schalles demonstrating pinning techniques

Jake Shannon demonstrating catch wrestling leglocks

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Wade Schalles and Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling.

They were the lead instructors at the Certified Catch Wrestler Training Camp Spring 2014, which was held June 13-15 in Englishtown, New Jersey. We spoke with them at the conclusion of Saturday's session.

This was also the first camp where Wade Schalles -- a two-time NCAA wrestling champion, a master pinner, and a 1991 inductee in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame -- was serving as coach of Scientific Wrestling, following the recent passing of their previous coach, the legendary Billy Robinson.

"It's exciting to branch off and try some new things," said Wade Schalles. "I was in wrestling for over 40 years, and I don't want to say I'm tired of [it], I'm just looking for a different challenge, and catch wrestling provides that. It adds another element that's been void in my life from wrestling, and that's the submission side, either through chokes or joint locks. And that's a lot of fun, too. It's a different animal. And learning a different method, a different strategy, is exciting."

Said Jake Shannon, "Billy [Robinson] brought us, with his being in movies, with him being all over the world, globe-trotting from competitive wrestling to pro wrestling, all this other stuff, training all the MMA guys in Japan, all that -- he brought a certain sensibility to us. What I'm hoping is now with Wade, and Wade's incredible resume, that we start attracting these high-level wrestling athletes."

Along with the current series of catch wrestling competitions, all this marks the start of a rapid period of growth for catch wrestling.

"I've been doing this for a long time. I know there's not a huge market for it yet," said Jake Shannon. "But I see enormous potential. And I've never seen it hotter than it is now."

We discussed why catch wrestling is so hot now, why the next five years will likely see it dramatically grow, the opportunities it gives college and elite wrestlers as an alternative to MMA without the dangers of that sport or for training for MMA, the need to create a level of real professional wrestling, the role of Karl Gotch and Billy Robinson, the relation of catch wrestling to MMA and folkstyle and freestyle wrestling, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Jake Shannon on Billy Robinson

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling.

The catch wrestling and combat sports worlds were saddened last week to learn of the passing of the catch wrestling legend Billy Robinson at age 75. Billy and Jake had been conducting numerous catch wrestling seminars around the world, and had collaborated on many books and videos, including Billy's memoir, "Physical Chess: My Life in Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestling" (ECW Press, 2012).

Jake has also created a tribute page for Billy on Facebook, called the Billy Robinson Memorial.

We spoke with Jake Shannon by phone Tuesday about the life and legacy of Billy Robinson.

While he said that Billy is "irreplaceable," he noted, "He lived and breathed catch-as-catch-can. And he would be pissed if we didn't continue it on."

He added, "I don't know what people believe, but he'd haunt you, and whack you with a ghost cane if we didn't keep this going. I can guarantee you that."

We discussed a lot more about Billy Robinson and his legacy, how he was considered to be the best catch wrestling coach, the many tributes to Billy pouring in from all around the world, plans for the next phase in the rebirth of catch wrestling, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Jake Shannon on Catch Wrestling in 2014

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling.

A pioneer in reviving catch wrestling through his books, tournaments, seminars, and camps, he now sees that a decade of work is resulting in a steady growth of the sport.

We spoke with Jake Shannon by phone Wednesday.

"We've kind of created a culture where people are holding it to a higher standard," he said. "There's no more b.s. We want people out on the mats. We want people learning the real history of it, not some made-up ad copy on the Internet to sell DVDs or something."

He stressed, "It's an exciting time. It really is exciting. It is beginning to blossom. So it's kind of 'Springtime for Catch Wrestling', if I can steal, if I could paraphrase a Mel Brooks movie title. I think it's a springtime for catch wrestling right now."

Coming up in 2014 are more events, including Scientific Wrestling's Certified Catch Wrestler Training Camp Winter 2014, February 7-8 in San Diego, California.

We also discussed the need for grassroots development of catch wrestling, the King of Catch tournaments which he started in 2007, the need for a professional level of catch wrestling, why investors should be involved with the sport, the sport's simple and fan-friendly rules, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon at East Coast Certified Catch Wrestler Training Camp

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with catch wrestling legend Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling.

They were the lead instructors at the East Coast Certified Catch Wrestler Training Camp 2013, which was held June 15-16 in Englishtown, New Jersey.

We spoke with both Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon right at the conclusion of this camp on Sunday.

"I'm trying to open the minds of people about how good catch-as-catch-can wrestling is," said Billy Robinson in this interview.

"It's superior to all other forms of grappling arts."

But their methods were not simply to show people the moves and holds of catch wrestling.

"My coach, Billy Riley from Wigan, and myself and Billy Joyce and all the old great timers, they tried to teach you how to learn how to learn. We want to teach people to learn how to learn catch."

We also discussed with both Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon why catch died out, why it is now being revived, what it is doing and must continue to do to become popular again, upcoming catch wrestling events, and much, much more.

Some photos from this camp can be seen on the No Holds Barred blog here.

No Holds Barred: On Fallon Fox, the Dragon Sleeper, and Knockouts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the technique used by MMA fighter Fallon Fox in her third-round submission victory over Allanna Jones Friday, May 24, at CFA 11, and the dangers of the continuing trend of more knockouts and fewer submissions in MMA. The Fallon Fox-Allanna Jones fight is now on YouTube.

Fallon Fox was quoted as saying that she first saw the move with which she won, a knee-to-the-neck choke, used by MMA fighter Shayna Baszler. Shayna Baszler confirmed by phone Sunday that she indeed uses this move, and said it is called the Dragon Sleeper.

Shayna Baszler is also a Level 1 Scientific Wrestler Trainer. Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling also confirmed by phone Sunday that she was taught this move by MMA fighter and catch wrestler Josh Barnett, and that MMA legend Frank Shamrock also teaches it. In addition, Jake Shannon said that the name of the hold comes from its use by the Japanese pro wrestler Yoshihiro Asai AKA Ultimo Dragon, who has trained in real catch wrestling as have many Japanese pro wrestlers.

As the first openly transsexual fighter in MMA, Fallon Fox has many haters who continue to downplay her skills. But as is demonstrated, the submission hold she used to win her fight, and to advance to the finals of the CFA women's 145-pound tournament, is a technique with quite a sophisticated lineage.

But while Fallon Fox was using this hold, the trend in MMA of there being more and more knockouts, and thus more concussions, is continuing. Interestingly enough, the issue of concussions is being addressed by, of all organizations, the leader in staged pro wrestling, the WWE. That group recently donated $1.2 million to the non-profit Sports Legacy Institute to fund a new research program aimed at developing a treatment for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The implications of all this for the real combat sports are discussed.

Also discussed are the latest odds for the combat sports and possible inclusion on the program of the 2020 Olympics. The IOC Executive Board meets this Wednesday, May 29, and will be coming up with a shortlist of sports to be considered for a final vote in September for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics. Those combat sports are wrestling, karate, and wushu.

No Holds Barred: Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon on Why Catch Wrestling Is Physical Chess

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary catch wrestler Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon of Scientific Wrestling about Billy's new memoir, Physical Chess: My Life in Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestling.

This book is an ode of love to the sport of catch-as-catch-can wrestling, which the 74-year-old Billy Robinson calls in this book "the greatest sport in the world." He not only recounts how he became personally involved in the sport, but also how the conditions facing the British working class during the Great Depression and during and after World War II led to an explosion of interest and participation in wrestling. There are also plenty of colorful stories and anecdotes from Billy's travels around the world.

This is a must, must-read book for anyone interested in the combat sports and especially the history of the various styles of grappling and wrestling.

"The original sport of catch-as-catch-can is physical chess. It's a chess game with the mind, the body, condition, everything," explained Billy in this interview. "It's beautiful. I'm sorry, I'm an old man but I still love it."

We spoke with Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon by phone late Sunday night into early Monday morning in a lengthy but incredible discussion. Among the many topics we also covered were how catch wrestling builds humility, respect, and discipline; the decline of athleticism in the West in recent years; why in catch wrestling you must "learn how to learn"; the modern origins and history of catch wrestling including the role of Riley's Gym in Wigan, England; catch wrestling and Japan; the need for a major revival of catch wrestling both as a discipline and a spectator sport; mixed martial arts and catch wrestlers including Kazushi Sakuraba and Josh Barnett; why Billy Robinson is today the most successful and influential catch-as-catch-can coach; the current plans for catch wrestling seminars and tournaments around the world; and much more.

No Holds Barred: Jake Shannon on King of Catch Wrestling Tournament on May 19

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jake Shannon of ScientificWrestling.com.

Jake is the main organizer of an event which marks another step in the revival of catch-as-catch-can wrestling, the King of Catch Wrestling Tournament.

This tournament takes place Saturday, May 19, at Stable Jiu Jitsu, 175 N. Cawston Ave., Suite 130A, in Hemet, California 92545.

At this event, you can win by submission or pin, with a pin count of three. All submissions are legal, all matches are best two out of three falls with a 12-minute time limit per fall, there are no points, and all striking, biting, eye-gouging, and hair-pulling are illegal. There are five weight classes. In the event of a draw during a match, a replay occurs. If there is a second draw, both wrestlers are eliminated.

Men and women from all styles of wrestling, grappling, martial arts, and combat sports are encouraged to compete.

We spoke with Jake Shannon by phone Monday night about the King of Catch Wrestling Tournament and the rebirth of this sport. We discussed the many catch wrestling tournaments and seminars scheduled for the rest of this year, as well as previous events. We also discussed some of the history of catch wrestling and the influence of people like the late Karl Gotch, Billy Robinson, Roy Wood, Billy Riley, Kazushi Sakuraba, and many more.

Catch is back, and the King of Catch Wrestling Tournament will help the sport grow and reclaim its rightful place in the combat sports world.

No Holds Barred: Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon on Catch Wrestling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with catch wrestling legend Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon of ScientificWrestling.com.

Although he is in his seventies, Billy Robinson is still traveling the world to conduct seminars to pass on the art and science of catch wrestling, as he learned it in places like the legendary Riley's Gym in Wigan, England. Jake Shannon is also a key part of this movement to revive catch wrestling, organizing seminars and training sessions as well as writing books and using the Internet to promote the revival of this sport.

We spoke at length with both Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon by phone on Friday about the past, present, and future of catch wrestling. We discussed what catch wrestling is, some of the problems in the rules of other styles of wrestling, how the old rules of catch wrestling included winning by pin or submission but often varied greatly and were sometimes even negotiated before a match, the Wigan theory "to learn how to learn wrestling", how catch wrestling teaches you how to learn and to open your mind, why catch wrestling today needs a "united marketing front" like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu had in mixed martial arts, the influence of catch wrestling in mixed martial arts, how numerous wrestlers and fighters for years have been training in catch wrestling, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Jake Shannon and the Revival of Catch Wrestling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses catch wrestling, also known as catch-as-catch-can wrestling, with Jake Shannon of ScientificWrestling.com.
Catch wrestling is a style of wrestling where, to put it simply, both pins and submissions can win a match. It is a style that was immensely popular early in the twentieth century, when professional wrestling was to a degree a legitimate sport, and was on a par in popularity in America with baseball and boxing.
After virtually going underground for decades, the popularity of mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu, and various styles of grappling have helped revive interest in catch wrestling. Today Jake Shannon, among others, both writes about this discipline and helps train people in it.
We spoke with him by phone Friday night about the movement to revive catch wrestling, its storied if often cloudy history, and what would have to take place for it to make a comeback as a popular spectator sport. This is a fascinating topic with someone who has studied it thoroughly and currently practices and teaches this discipline, and thus provides important perspective for all the combat sports.
