Lock Him Up!
by Eddie Goldman
The loud booing of Trump and mass chanting of "Lock him up!" at Sunday's World Series game 5 in Washington between the Nationals and Houston Astros was a great and historic moment in baseball, sports, and American cultural history. But there was incomplete and bad reporting about it.
MLB Network's MLB Tonight showed Trump but didn't mentioned the boos and chants. The New York Times just ran an AP story that incorrectly said Trump "appeared unfazed and continued waving." Actually his smile turned to a frown and he stopped waving as the chants grew, as seen in videos of this: https://www.rawstory.com/2019/10/watch-trumps-face-change-once-he-realizes-world-series-crowd-is-chanting-lock-him-up.
The Washington Post repeated that incorrect description, but had more details, writing: "the crowd roared into sustained booing - hitting almost 100 decibels. Chants of 'Lock him up' and 'Impeach Trump' then broke out at Nationals Park ...." They also reported that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred played golf with Trump Saturday.
Of late the media has been reporting on the huge and dramatic street protests taking place in Chile, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Algeria, Sudan, Egypt, Iraq, Ecuador, Argentina, Honduras, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Russia, the U.K., Georgia, and likely even more countries. Notably absent from this list of righteous struggles is the U.S.
Sometimes it takes just one incident to ignite the fire of discontent among the people. Whether or not this special moment at Nationals Park plays that role remains to be seen.
But the mass discontent against this criminal, racist, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ, anti-working class, corrupt Trump gang is already there. Perhaps it is time for someone to form a National Lock Him Up Coalition.
And that would be as American as baseball, apple pie, and impeachment.
