No Holds Barred: Ray Sefo on World Series of Fighting
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with kickboxing and muay Thai legend Ray Sefo, who is now the president, co-owner, and co-founder of the new mixed martial arts promotion, the World Series of Fighting.
The much-anticipated debut card for the World Series of Fighting will take place Saturday, November 3, at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The top fights will be televised live in the U.S. on NBC Sports Network.
The main event will be a heavyweight battle between Andrei Arlovski and Devin Cole. The co-main event will be a light heavyweight fight between Anthony Johnson and D.J. Linderman. Also on the televised card, Miguel Torres will fight Marlon Moraes in a bantamweight bout and Gregor Gracie will take on Tyson Steele in a welterweight bout. The other fights on this card will be webcast, and plans are underway to webcast the entire card to the rest of the world outside the U.S.
We spoke with Ray Sefo by phone Monday afternoon to preview WSOF 1.
Speaking about why he expects the World Series of Fighting to be successful, he said in this interview, "There's so much talent out there, and there's not enough stages that these guys can showcase their talent." He added, "Not every league can have started and come out on NBC Sports Network."
We also discussed how a series of conversations got him involved as president of the World Series of Fighting, the transition of fellow kickboxer and WSOF fighter Tyrone Spong to MMA, the use of a ten-sided cage known as a Decagon for their events, how he expects the World Series of Fighting to advance step by step, why he still wants to continue fighting until he gets 100 fights, and much more.
