No Holds Barred: Rose Gracie Cracks the Code

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Rose Gracie, the president of the Gracie U.S. Nationals and the Gracie Worlds, about the set of rules at these events where there are no points or judges and a competitor can only win by submission.
The 2012 Gracie U.S. Nationals jiu-jitsu tournament, which featured both gi and no-gi divisions, took place January 28-29 in Los Angeles. The 2012 Gracie Worlds, also with gi and no-gi divisions, will take place Saturday, July 14, and Sunday, July 15, at the TheFitExpo San Jose at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California.
We spoke with Rose Gracie by phone on Monday to follow up on our interview which took place before the Gracie Nationals.
"I literally felt like I cracked the code," said Rose Gracie about the results of using these rules allowing only victory by submission. "It was literally in slow motion like watching the rebirth of jiu-jitsu."
We discussed how these rules reinvigorated this competition and made it better for both the athletes and fans than under the old rules, which had points, advantages, and judges. She explained how these rules go back to the original vision of jiu-jitsu pioneered by her family, including her grandfather, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu co-founder Helio Gracie, and her father, UFC co-founder Rorion Gracie, who attended the event to support her. We also discussed the relationship of jiu-jitsu to mixed martial arts, striking and grappling, the drug testing which took place at the event, the coverage by the media, how the kid's competition was conducted, the importance of using events like these to teach children values to make society better, how events under these rules may once again revolutionize jiu-jitsu, and much more.
