No Holds Barred: James Feng on Premiere of New MMA Documentary, Fight Life
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with James Feng, producer and director of the new mixed martial arts documentary film, Fight Life.
Fight Life gives us a behind-the-scenes and unvarnished look at the everyday lives of mixed martial arts fighters, both before, during, and after their fights. Featured are Jake Shields, Lyle Beerbohm, Nick Diaz, and Gilbert Melendez, along with interviews with MMA legends Big John McCarthy, Frank Shamrock, and others.
The film had its premiere last month in San Francisco, and is now playing at a one-week engagement at the Clinton Street Theater in Portland, Oregon. Screenings will soon be announced in California for Sacramento, San Jose, Los Angeles, and San Diego, as well as in other locations.
We spoke with James Feng by phone on Thursday about this film. He recounted the tremendously positive response the film received by those who saw it at its premiere in San Francisco. The film, he stressed, showcases the real lives of the fighters rather than offering "glitz". We also discussed many of the issues raised in the film, including the low pay of MMA fighters, cutting weight, the absence of health insurance, amateur MMA, and much more.
