No Holds Barred: Colby Covington

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with 2011 NCAA Div. I All-American wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter Colby Covington.
After winning a national junior college championship at Iowa Central Community College and becoming a two-time Pac-10 champion and All-American at Oregon State, Colby Covington, like so many successful wrestlers before him, has turned to mixed martial arts. He had his first professional fight February 11 at the Midtown Throwdown III in Eugene, Oregon, and won by a first-round stoppage over Chris Ensley. He is awaiting confirmation of his next fight, which he hopes will be in March.
Now training at the famed American Top Team facility in Coconut Creek, Florida, and fighting at welterweight, Colby Covington has his eyes set on becoming a world champion in mixed martial arts. While he obviously has a long way to go in order to achieve that goal, he believes that he has the skills and dedication to do just that.
We spoke with him Monday afternoon by phone about his new career as a mixed martial arts fighter and why he decided to become an MMA fighter.
"I'm not in this to make a living," he said in this interview. "I'm in this to be the best in the world, and I honestly think I can be."
He explained the changes in technique he is learning in this transition, such as how shooting and setting up takedowns are different in wrestling and MMA. He already views himself as a well-rounded fighter, adjusting to the striking and submissions of MMA as well. We also discussed his relations with the wrestling community today, his former roommates at Iowa Central Joe Soto and Jon Jones, and much more.
