No Holds Barred: ADCC and M-1 Global World Champion Vinny Magalhaes

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with 2011 ADCC 99+ kg world champion and M-1 Global light heavyweight champion Vinny Magalhaes.

So far, 2011 has been an incredible year for Vinny Magalhaes. Fighting out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, on April 28, 2011, he captured the vacant M-1 Global light heavyweight title by submitting Viktor Nemkov with a mounted gogoplata which has been nicknamed a "Vinnyplata". Next, he was victorious in the two-day ADCC 2011 World Submission Fighting Championship in the 99+ kg division, defeating defending champion Fabricio Werdum in the finals on September 25.

On October 14, he will be defending his M-1 light heavyweight crown against Mikhail Zayats, a 2008 world combat sambo champion, who has won his last four MMA fights, three by submission and one by TKO. That fight will be the co-main event on the live M-1 Global telecast on Showtime in the U.S., which will be held at the Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

We spoke with Vinny Magalhaes by phone Saturday about winning these world titles in mixed martial arts and grappling during the same year. He explained how he has changed his mentality as a mixed martial arts fighter after starting off with a losing record, to win his last four fights and six out of his last seven, to up his record to 8-5. We discussed how he can compete on a world level in both these sports at the same time. He explained why in mixed martial arts, even though he is training in all techniques, his ground game is still his main weapon. We discussed his training with M-1 heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili, who will defend his title against Kenny Garner on that same October 14 card, and much more.
