No Holds Barred: John Perretti and Matt Phillips on the Origin of Mixed Martial Arts, Part Two

(This show contains some explicit language.) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman continues our discussion with the legendary matchmaker, martial artist, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti, and Matt Phillips of the Martial Arts Resource Group, about the origin and nature of mixed martial arts.

In one of the wildest discussions on this show, we refute various attempts at distorting the history of mixed martial arts, and thus distorting the nature of this sport. More information is provided on the famous mixed match between Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki in 1976 by Matt Phillips, who spoke with the legendary Gene LeBell, who was the referee of that fight. We also discuss the usage of the term "mixed martial arts" in a review of the first UFC by Los Angeles Times television critic Howard Rosenberg on November 15, 1993, and other earlier references to that term. We stress the responsibility of the media today to strive to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth about mixed martial arts, why so many are failing to do so, and much more.
