No Holds Barred: Chris Thomas, Carl Mascarenhas, Weekend Fight Previews

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our correspondent Chris Thomas, and with Carl Mascarenhas, president and CEO of the DaMMAge Fight League.

With Chris, we primarily previewed the many fights coming up this weekend, including the highly-anticipated M-1 Challenge XXII on Friday, December 10, in Moscow, Russia, and the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final in Tokyo, Japan, on Saturday, December 11. We also discussed three other fight cards scheduled for December 11: the Showtime Bantamweight Tournament, the Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana WBA 140-pound title fight, and the UFC 124 Georges St-Pierre-Josh Koscheck fight. While we had different assessments of these events, we agreed which one is likeliest to be the best of the weekend: the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final.

With Carl, we discussed the future plans for the DaMMAge Fight League. Their next card is slated to be on Saturday, February 26, 2011, with an exact location and fight card to be announced shortly.

We spoke with both Chris and Carl in New York on Thursday night.

The first round of the two-stage, single-elimination Showtime Bantamweight Tournament will take place Saturday, December 11, at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, and will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime. On that card, unbeaten IBF bantamweight champion Yonnhy Perez (20-0-1, 14 KOs), of Santa Fe Springs, California, by way of Colombia, will face the fighter from whom he captured that title in October 2009, Joseph King Kong Agbeko (27-2, 22 KOs), of the Bronx, New York, by way of Ghana, Africa.

The exciting former flyweight and super flyweight world champion Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1, 27 KOs) of Sydney, Australia, by way of Armenia, will fight the undefeated Abner Mares (20-0-1, 13 KOs) of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, who now resides in Montebello, California.

We spoke with Yonnhy Perez, Joseph King Kong Agbeko, Vic Darchinyan, and Abner Mares on media conference calls to get their views on what to expect in this important tournament.
