No Holds Barred: Roxanne Modafferi
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with one of the most interesting fighters in mixed martial arts, Roxanne Modafferi.
In what many observers have said was the best fight on the card, Roxanne won a three-round split decision over Tara LaRosa May 21 on the "Moosin: God of Martial Arts" show in Worcester, Massachusetts, at a catch weight of 130-pounds.
We spoke via Skype with Roxanne Modafferi, who has lived in Japan and has been teaching English there for many years. We discussed what happened in this close fight and its significance. She explained why and how she could fight Tara LaRosa, even though both are friends. She explained why she believes that she has become a complete fighter. She also made clear that she remains signed with Strikeforce, and would next like to fight Strikeforce 135-pound champion Sarah Kaufman. (Note to Scott Coker: Book the fight!)
In addition, we also discussed how life for her is in Japan, the differences between the culture there and in America where she grew up and went to school, why she loves it in Japan, her extensive use of the Internet and social networking sites, and much more.
In an era where many fighters think it is their job to call each other names and trash talk, speaking with Roxanne Modafferi is a welcome change to the sanity, rationality, honor, humor, and respect which should characterize the combat sports.
