On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the mixed martial arts veteran and star, and an Olympic and world silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, Matt Lindland. Matt is also one of the founders of one of the most successful teams in mixed martial arts, the Team Quest Fight Club.
Matt will be headlining a Strikeforce Challengers card this Friday, May 21, at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon. His opponent will be Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Kevin Casey. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We spoke by phone on Monday, May 17, which was also the day Matt turned 40 years of age. As usual, Matt was very outspoken and candid about his views. We discussed this fight with Kevin Casey and what to expect. We examined some of his recent fights, the lessons he has drawn from them, his continuing development as a fighter, and how he is still learning. We analyzed some of the many problems in mixed martial arts, including incompetent judging of fights, the failure and closure of many promotional companies, the need for some type of union or association for fighters, and the dim prospects of that happening anytime soon. We also discussed the poor or nonexistent marketing of the sport of wrestling, what is happening in the Super Six super middleweight boxing tournament on Showtime, and much more.
