No Holds Barred: Alistair Overeem, Brett Rogers, Ricardo Mayorga, Din Thomas, Roger Gracie, Kevin Randleman, Andrei Arlovski, Devin Price, Mike Marley
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents a critical preview of the Strikeforce and Shine Fights mixed martial arts cards scheduled for this Saturday, May 15.
The Strikeforce show takes place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and will be telecast live in the U.S. on Showtime. The main event will feature Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, defending his title for the first time in over two years, against Brett Rogers. Also on the televised card, heavyweight Andrei Arlovski fights Antonio "Big Foot" Silva, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling sensation Roger Gracie takes on former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman in a light heavyweight bout.
The Shine Fights card takes place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and will be telecast on pay-per-view in the U.S. and Canada. Its main event is an old school, style vs. style fight, as former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga makes his mixed martial arts debut against American Top Team veteran Din Thomas, at a catch weight of 160 pounds.
On a series of media conference calls, we spoke with Alistair Overeem, Brett Rogers, Roger Gracie, Kevin Randleman, and Andrei Arlovski, about their fights and related issues.
We spoke with Ricardo Mayorga and Din Thomas at a New York news conference last month about what to expect in their fights. We also spoke with Shine Fights CEO Devin Price about their business model, and journalist/publicist Mike Marley about the relation between boxing and mixed martial arts.
We also provide the kind of commentary you expect on No Holds Barred, where we tell it like it is regarding numerous problems in mixed martial arts, including the absence of state-of-the-art drug-testing, the growing number of thug-like incidents and use of trash-talking, the questionable business models of Shine Fights and also Bellator, and more.
