No Holds Barred: Felicia Oh on Women's Grappling Camp, and Everything Else

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the grappling star and double gold medalist at the 2009 FILA Grappling World Championships in December, Felicia Oh.

We started our lengthy discussion with a preview of the upcoming Women's Grappling Camp.

This takes place January 25-29, 2010, at Big John McCarthy Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia, California.

This camp is open to women of all levels of experience and expertise, from first-timers and beginners all the way up to world champions. Besides training on the mat, there will seminars on many topics. The atmosphere at the camp will actually be like a camp, as opposed to a typical training seminar. The camp promises, "All girls, all grappling, all the time."

This interview was also not your typical pre-event rundown. Besides previewing the Women's Grappling Camp, we delved into a wide-ranging series of topics including how women on the mat must deal with the male-dominated world of combat sports, the type of women who train in jiu-jitsu and grappling, the growth of women's grappling, the cultural barriers to the participation of women in combat sports, her own observations on her decision to focus so much of her life on jiu-jitsu and grappling, the role of planning in life, the good and bad of technology, how jiu-jitsu is very cerebral, why intellectuals should train in combat sports, the future of the media, why neither of us have any tattoos, and even more.

This is another incredible discussion, and we have it for you right here on No Holds Barred.

Also, Felicia Oh has also been nominated for the Dec. 2009 U.S. Women's Athlete of the Month in an online poll organized by the U.S. Olympic Committee. You can vote for her here. Voting ends January 18.
