No Holds Barred: Renato Tavares of North American Fight Association on Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu World Trials
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the veteran martial artist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and instructor, Renato Tavares, who is one of the founders and the president of the North American Fight Association (NAFA).
Besides offering training in the combat sports and martial arts, NAFA emphasizes "the fundamental core values of integrity, honor, respect and courage."
NAFA is organizing the Abu Dhabi World Pro North and Central America Trials in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This event will be held Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the Brevard Community College Melbourne Campus, Building # 6, in Melbourne, Florida. This is a qualifying event for the first-ever World Professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cup, which will take place May 1 and 2 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
These events aim to establish an international professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu circuit. The North and Central America Trials are also the kickoff event for NAFA, which plans follow this up with the NAFA 2009 U.S. Grapplers Cup Series.
We had a chance to speak with Renato Tavares about all these important events, the growth of grappling and Jiu-Jitsu, the potential for a professional Jiu-Jitsu league, the need to emphasize positive values in the martial arts and combat sports, and much more.
