SecondsOut Radio: Paulie Malignaggi, Sechew Powell, Andre Berto, Johnny Bos

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews two very different boxing events coming up this week in New York.

On Saturday night, February 17, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan Center near Madison Square Garden, a trio of fights which will be televised in the U.S. on HBO's Boxing After Dark will take place. Junior welterweight contender Paulie Malignaggi (21-1, 5 KOs), in his first fight since his gutsy performance last year against Miguel Cotto, takes on the tough Edner Cherry (21-4-2, 10 KOs). Junior middleweight contender Sechew Powell (20-1, 12 KOs) also faces an experienced and tough opponent in Ishe Smith (18-1, 8 KOs). And the hot undefeated welterweight prospect Andre Berto (16-0, 14 KOs) takes on the veteran Norberto Bravo (23-12-3, 12 KOs).

We spoke with Paulie Malignaggi, Sechew Powell, and Andre Berto on a recent media conference call.

Those in the boxing world are quite familiar with the colorful and controversial matchmaker Johnny Bos. He has recently faced a number of difficulties, including a triple whammy of congestive heart failure, a growing pile of bills, and a shrinking pile of checks.

There will be a roast and benefit for Johnny in New York this Thursday, February 15, to help raise funds for him. It takes place at Hurley's Saloon in Manhattan at 232 West 48th St between 7th and 8th Avenues at 7:00 PM ET. There are still a few tickets left at $250 per seat for what will be an unforgettable night. If you can't make the event but want to contribute, donations of $100 or more will get you a DVD of the event. And if you are unable to contribute this amount, please send whatever you can to Mike Marley, 250 W. 100th St., Suite 1102, New York, NY 10025 USA.

We spoke by phone with the legendary Johnny Bos about his situation and to get a sample of his always enlightening and entertaining views on the world of boxing.
