Senate Defeats S. 1955 - Your Grassroots Support Made a Difference - Prevent Blindness America
Dear Vision Advocate,
In case you were wondering whether you can make a difference in Washington, let us assure you that you can! Thanks to your countless emails, phone calls, letters and faxes, the Senate soundly defeated S. 1955, the Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization and Affordability Act. Your message -- that patient protections come first -- was heard loud and clear on Capitol Hill.
As reported earlier, S. 1955 would have seriously undermined important patient protections at the state level, such as mandatory coverage of eye exams, eye glasses, and other vision services.
In order to move the bill forward, the Senate would have had to invoke "cloture," a parliamentary procedure that cuts off debate and allow the bill to move to a vote. If a bill doesn’t get 60 votes, it can’t proceed. Because S. 1955 didn’t get 60 votes, the bill is effectively dead.
All of this "Inside the Beltway" speak is our way of saying THANK YOU! Were it not for PBA's advocates telling their Senators to oppose this bill, we might have lost this important vote.

If they voted "Nay," send them a follow-up email, thanking them for standing up for patient's rights. To send a follow-up email, type in your Zip code in the "Contact Congress" button at right and click "GO!" On our Action Alert page, click the "e-mail" link below your Senator's names.
Please know that your actions made the difference. Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Hugh R. Parry
