On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Nola Hanson and Jess Knapp of Trans Boxing.
Trans Boxing is a boxing collective for trans and gender nonconforming people which holds training classes in Brooklyn and Manhattan, with plans for more locations on the way. They are in the process of forming an organization called the Trans Boxing Collective.
We spoke with Nola Hanson and Jess Knapp Saturday in New York.
"As our group is starting to grow, we're needing to delegate different responsibilities and roles within the group," Nola Hanson said. "And then the question has come up, 'How do we want to be organized, and who is going to be making these decisions?'
"We're moving towards more of a collective organization and having members of the collective take on certain responsibilities."
We discussed the steps they are taking to establish a collective organization; why trans and gender nonconforming people being attacked and threatened because of their gender identity has led many to learn how to fight; why there is a need for classes aimed specifically at trans and gender nonconforming people; their plans for 2018, including working with other organizations, doing seminars, starting youth programs, and finding funding; the banning of the use of seven words and phrases by the Trump administration for officials in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services, including the word "transgender"; how people can help Trans Boxing whether they are trans or gender nonconforming or not, including making donations; and much more.
