No Holds Barred: McLaren Report on Russian State-Sponsored Doping in Sport Part II

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the audio from the teleconference of the December 9 London press conference with Professor Richard H. McLaren, law professor at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) enlisted Prof. McLaren to lead the investigation and to issue a report about media reports of state-sponsored doping in Russia in sport. This is the second and final part of that report, and was made public Friday. The first part was issued on July 18, 2016.

Key Highlights of 2nd Report

Institutionalised Doping Conspiracy and Cover Up

1. An institutional conspiracy existed across summer and winter sports athletes who participated with Russian officials within the Ministry of Sport and its infrastructure, such as the RUSADA, CSP and the Moscow Laboratory, along with the FSB for the purposes of manipulating doping controls. The summer and winter sports athletes were not acting individually but within an organised infrastructure as reported on in the 1st Report.
2. This systematic and centralised cover up and manipulation of the doping control process evolved and was refined over the course of its use at London 2012 Summer Games, Universiade Games 2013, Moscow IAAF World Championships 2013, and the Winter Games in Sochi in 2014. The evolution of the infrastructure was also spawned in response to WADA regulatory changes and surprise interventions.
3. The swapping of Russian athletes’ urine samples further confirmed in this 2nd Report as occurring at Sochi, did not stop at the close of the Winter Olympics. The sample swapping technique used at Sochi became a regular monthly practice of the Moscow Laboratory in dealing with elite summer and winter athletes. Further DNA and salt testing confirms the technique, while others relied on DPM.
4. The key findings of the 1st Report remain unchanged. The forensic testing, which is based on immutable facts, is conclusive. The evidence does not depend on verbal testimony to draw a conclusion. Rather, it tests the physical evidence and a conclusion is drawn from those results. The results of the forensic and laboratory analysis initiated by the IP establish that the conspiracy was perpetrated between 2011 and 2015.

The Athlete Part of Conspiracy and Cover Up

5. Over 1000 Russian athletes competing in summer, winter and Paralympic sport, can be identified as being involved in or benefiting from manipulations to conceal positive doping tests. Based on the information reported to International Federations through the IP to WADA there are 600 (84%) summer athletes and 95 (16%) winter athletes.

London Summer Olympic Games

6. Fifteen Russian athlete medal winners were identified out of the 78 on the London Washout Lists. Ten of these athletes have now had their medals stripped.

IAAF Moscow World Championships

7. Following the 2013 IAAF Moscow World Championships, 4 athletics athletes’ samples were swapped. Additional target testing is in progress.

Sochi Winter Olympic Games

8. Sample swapping is established by 2 female ice hockey players’ samples with male DNA.
9. Tampering with original sample established by 2 [sport] athletes, winners of four Sochi Olympic Gold medals, and a female Silver medal winner in [sport] with physiologically impossible salt readings.
10. Twelve medal winning athletes (including the above 3) from 44 examined samples had scratches and marks on the inside of the caps of their B sample bottles, indicating tampering.
11. Six winners of 21 Paralympic medals are found to have had their urine samples tampered with at Sochi.

The complete McLaren Independent Investigations Report into Sochi Allegations - Part II can be read and downloaded here.

Plus, we open with a commentary on how once again this is evidence of the corrupt nature of the Olympics and the Olympic movement, and how those interested in developing sport for its positive values should have nothing to do with this movement and its organizations and stay out of it.

No Holds Barred: Balogun Ojetade on Dec. 11 Youth Survival Open House

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Balogun Ojetade, the founder, director, and master instructor of the Afrikan Martial Arts Institute, and co-chair of the Urban Survival and Preparedness Institute (USPI).

They will be hosting a Youth Survival Open House event Sunday, December 11, at the Northwest Atlanta Library at Scott's Crossing, 2489 Perry Boulevard, Atlanta, Georgia 30318. It aims to start to teach survival tips and practical survival training for children, tweens, and teens. This event is free and open to the public.

We spoke with Balogun Ojetade by phone Tuesday.

"The Youth Survival Open House is an event to teach the youth how to survive during these trying times," he said.

"We're going to deal with how to handle police brutality. We're going to deal with human trafficking. In Atlanta, Georgia, where the open house is taking place, Atlanta, Georgia, is number one in the country in child sex traffic. So we decided to teach children how to be safe and avoid abduction.

"And then we're dealing with bullies, also. How to deal with, avoid, and if you can't avoid, how to physically manage a bully."

There will be three sessions on these topics at the Youth Survival Open House, from 2 PM to 5:30 PM.

Of course, this event can only be the start of this type of education and training. Successfully dealing with them, he said, requires training in the martial arts.

While this event will show to the youth in attendance just a few martial arts techniques, "Hopefully they will enroll in a self-defense class somewhere or enroll in an ongoing martial arts class to help themselves.

"I fully believe that the key to ending bullying is for the victim and the bully to study martial arts."

We thus discussed a lot about the martial arts, including why studying disciplines like judo and muay Thai is essential, the importance of grappling and how African martial arts are based in grappling, wrestling takedowns for self-defense, how good throws can stop bullies, and why the goal here is first to avoid danger.

"There's an absolute need, always has been, a strong need for people to learn to defend themselves. This is a dangerous world that we live in," he said.

That need has become even more immediate with the rise of openly racist and fascist elements in both the U.S. and the world.

"But the climate now," he stressed, "if you're not training now, you really are either ignorant of what's going on or lazy or you're just playing with your own life."

And he cited an open gathering in April of white supremacists not far from Atlanta.

"That tells me that there's something really bad coming."

In addition, we discussed the need for every woman to take a self-defense course; the role of Nzinga Mbande, sometimes known as Queen Nzinga, the 17th century leader of the Mbundu people in modern-day Angola, in developing the martial arts; the drawings on the walls of the ancient tombs of Beni Hasan in today's Egypt, made some four to five thousand years ago, which show training in wrestling and martial arts techniques; and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Boxing's Super Duper Saturday, December 10 - Cuellar-Mares, Charlo-Williams, Joshua-Molina, Ruiz-Parker

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the main title fights which will take place on Boxing's Super Duper Saturday, December 10.

The action starts in Auckland, New Zealand, as two undefeated heavyweights meet for the vacant WBO heavyweight title. Mexican-American Andy Ruiz Jr. (29-0, 19 KOs) will face Joseph Parker of New Zealand (21-0, 18 KOs) at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. This fight will be shown live in New Zealand on Sky Arena, in the U.K. on BoxNation, and in the U.S. in Spanish on UniMas, and on tape-delay in the U.S. on HBO.

A second major heavyweight belt will be on the line that day, this time in the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Unbeaten IBF champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua (17-0, 17 KOs) will face veteran Eric Molina (25-3, 19 KOs). This will headline a card shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office, with the Joshua-Molina fight also being shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.

That evening in the U.S. there will also be a championship doubleheader at the Galen Center at USC in Los Angeles, which is part of the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) series of TV shows. In a match postponed from June, WBA featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) will face former three-division champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs), and IBF super welterweight champion Jermall Charlo (24-0, 18 KOs) will fight undefeated contender Julian "J-Rock" Williams (22-0-1, 14 KOs). This will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime and in Mexico on Televisa.

We spoke with Jesus Cuellar, Abner Mares, Jermall Charlo, and Julian Williams on media conference calls. We also run a short interview with promoter Richard Schaefer conducted by our colleague Chris Baldwin. And we explain how and why the idiot mainstream and boxing media are mainly ignoring the significance of all these fights on Super Duper Saturday, why HBO's latest mismatch is not included as part of Super Duper Saturday, and much more.
