No Holds Barred: Dan Kanagie on Aug. 30 Liberty Bell Classic/King of Catch Wrestling Tournament

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Dan Kanagie of the North American Catch Wrestling Association about the Liberty Bell Classic/King of Catch Wrestling Tournament.

Presented by the North American Catch Wrestling Association and Scientific Wrestling, this year's tournament takes place Saturday, August 30, at Primal Gym, 231 Bakers Basin Road, Lawrenceville, New Jersey 08648. In it, you can only win by pin or submission, with no points or judges.

We spoke with Dan Kanagie by phone Wednesday.

"We're having the amateur tournament, and then we're having the superfight main event directly afterwards," he said.

The superfight "is going to be crowning the first American heavyweight champion in about 100 years."

This important match will pit the two-time King of Catch Wrestling heavyweight champion Luis Ojeda of San Diego, California, against the 2013 King of Catch Wrestling USA absolute division champion Anthony Sansonetti of Williston Park, New York.

We discussed how this championship bout may become a matchup of styles, the best-of-three falls format of the matches in this event, why catch wrestling rules are more open than the rules in other styles of wrestling and grappling, the current rise and rebirth of catch wrestling, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Wolfgang Burghardt of CSIT on Workers' Sports Movement

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Wolfgang Burghardt, the secretary general of CSIT, the International Workers and Amateurs in Sports Confederation.

Although its name and structure have changed over the years, the origins of CSIT date back to May 1913 in Ghent, Belgium. The organization has a rich history of organizing international events, including, before the Second World War, helping to organize the Workers' Olympiads.

Now in its second century. CSIT has always seen its task as serving the development of the workers' sports movement, and has maintained and developed ties to trade unions and workers as well as other individuals and organizations around the world. Since 1973, CSIT has been a member of SportAccord (formerly GAIFS), and was recognized by the International Olympic Committee on October 31, 1986. In 2011, CSIT became open to all amateur sportspeople, and broadened its scope beyond the workers' sports movement.

Since 2008, CSIT has organized an international multi-sport event called the World Sports Games.

The World Sports Games 2015 take place June 7-14, 2015, in Lignano, Italy.

We spoke with Wolfgang Burghardt by Skype Tuesday.

"CSIT is a multi-sports organization. It's a global organization with 45 whole members worldwide on three continents and federations. Meanwhile, we have about 230 million single members worldwide," he said.

"We have been founded in 1913 as a kind of counter-movement" to the official Olympic movement. "So it was the workers' movement."

He continued, "We had very interesting competitions and championships in the 1920s and 1930s, the well-known Workers' Olympics in Europe. So we had championships for 80-90,000 participants. You have to imagine, it was huge, yes, with 200,000 visitors."

Besides discussing this incredible and often forgotten history, we outlined the stages that the workers' sports movement has gone through over the last century, and where it stands today. We discussed how CSIT's events emphasize promoting peace among peoples of the world, how their focus is not elite Olympic-level athletes but amateur athletes, the development of the structure of CSIT, and their ties to many international sports organizations.

We also discussed how wrestling has been a key part of the workers' sports movement, that it was included in all three summer Workers' Olympiads in the 1920s and 1930s, and that it remains on the program of the World Sports Games, along with judo and beach wrestling.

In addition, we discussed more about the World Sports Games, the important book Sport, Peace and Development in honor of 100 years of CSIT, the historical role originally played by socialists and communists in the workers' sports movement, how no organizations from the U.S. are presently members of CSIT, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Kazu Watanabe and Steve Koepfer on Sambo, Japan, and Catch Wrestling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with three-time Japanese national sambo champion Kazu Watanabe and Sambo Steve Koepfer of New York Combat Sambo.

Kazu Watanabe has been visiting New York recently, both teaching sambo classes at New York Combat Sambo and acquainting himself with the culture and many attractions of New York.

We spoke with both Kazu Watanabe and Sambo Steve Koepfer Sunday at New York Combat Sambo in midtown Manhattan. Steve also helped explain some of the questions, which were all in English, to Kazu.

Although he started training in judo first, Kazu Watanabe has become a big devotee of sambo.

"Sambo is very creative," he said. He had trained at the famed Kiguchi Dojo near Tokyo for about 20 years in both sambo and judo. Two years ago, he retired from active competition, but he still trains other athletes in sambo and judo.

This year will be a big one for sambo in Japan, as the 2014 world championships, sanctioned by FIAS, the international sambo federation, will be held there. The dates are November 20-24, 2014, in Narita, Japan.

Another topic we discussed was catch wrestling. Sambo Steve, who also teaches catch wrestling, had several wrestlers competing at the 2014 Catch Wrestling World Championship, presented by the Snake Pit U.S.A., held July 27 at the MMA World Expo in New York.

Speaking of that tournament, the first real catch wrestling championship in New York in 94 years, he said, "I was pleased. I though it turned out really good. I think it exposed a lot of people" to catch wrestling.

"There was a huge crowd standing around the catch mat watching, much more than any other event going on at the Expo, I think. So it was fascinating to people."

In addition, we discussed the status of sambo and catch wrestling in Japan, why Steve believes that putting sambo in the Olympics might "ruin" the sport, Japanese food and tea, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Will Brooks and His Road to the Bellator Title

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with American Top Team fighter and Bellator MMA interim lightweight champion Will Brooks.

As recently as 2012, although he was undefeated in MMA on regional shows, Will Brooks was not well-known as a fighter. That changed on December 31, 2012, when he faced the far more experienced Japanese submission master and former Sengoku lightweight champion Satoru Kitaoka on the Dream 18 New Year's Eve card in Saitama, Japan. While Kitaoka tried for submissions, Will Brooks outfought him and pulled off the upset with a second-round TKO win, thus exploding onto the international MMA scene.

He soon thereafter signed with Bellator, and entered their season 8 lightweight tournament. After winning his opening round fight, he suffered his first professional loss, falling in 43 seconds of the first round by knockout to Saad Awad on February 28, 2013.

But it was far from over for Will Brooks, as he returned in the season 9 lightweight tournament, which he won. In the semifinals of that tournament, he avenged the loss to Saad Awad, winning a clear-cut unanimous decision.

As the lightweight tournament winner, he was in line for a title shot, but that would not come right away. Bellator booked for the main event of their May 17, 2014, pay-per-view, which was their first attempt at pay-per-view, the lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in a third fight against the former champion Michael Chandler. These two had already exchanged wins in classic fights, so this trilogy was highly anticipated. Instead, Will Brooks was scheduled for another, non-title fight on this card.

Another opportunity would unexpectedly come Will Brooks's way, as shortly before that card was to take place, Eddie Alvarez had to withdraw due to injury. Will Brooks was then moved into the fight with Michael Chandler, with the winner being named Bellator interim lightweight champion.

The Will Brooks-Michael Chandler fight went five action-packed rounds, and resulted in a controversial and split decision, with Will Brooks being awarded the victory and thus the interim title.

He now awaits word about his next fight, whether against the champion Alvarez whose status with Bellator may change soon, or in a rematch with Michael Chandler, or against someone else.

We spoke with Will Brooks Wednesday, July 30, at a Bellator media day at Dave and Buster's in New York.

Shortly after his victory over Kitaoka in Japan, he said, "I think maybe a couple of days after that, I got the contract to sign with Bellator, talked with my manager, and he pointed me in the direction that, he said that this would probably be a good idea, so I went with it. And now here I am today. I think I'm one of the faces of the organization now, and I'm just trying to do my part to continue to help this company grow."

We discussed his fight with Michael Chandler, why he believes that he deserved to win, his strategy during that fight, how he rebounded from his loss to Awad, his training at American Top Team, when he thinks he might fight next, the course of his career, and much, much more.
