No Holds Barred: Rob Maysey of MMAFA In Defense of Jon Jones

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Rob Maysey of the Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association.

Many people in and around the mixed martial arts world are blaming the cancellation of UFC 151, originally scheduled for September 1, on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Jones was slated to face Dan Henderson, but Henderson had to withdraw from that fight this week with an injury. Rather than take a new opponent on eight days' notice, which would have given Jones only three days actually to prepare for this fight, he declined. Instead, Jones will face Vitor Belfort on September 22. The postponement of Jones's appearance then led Zuffa, the parent company of UFC, to cancel the entire September 1 card and pay-per-view, and then blame the cancellation on Jones.

Not everyone, however, takes this view.

"I think Jon Jones made a very wise and professional decision. He followed the advice of his trainer," said Rob Maysey in this interview, which was recorded by phone Friday night. Noting that Jones was trying to protect both his title and earning capacity, he agreed that taking a new opponent on such short notice was not worth the risk. "He should be applauded for doing that," continued Rob Maysey. "He's the first fighter that I'm aware of that has had kind of the clout and the will to say 'no.'"

We thus discussed the real circumstances behind the cancellation of UFC 151, the attack on Jones in a press release issued by his promoters, the reaction to all of this by the MMA media, why fighter rights in MMA must be greatly expanded, what fighters and their supporters can do, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman of VADA on Anti-Doping Education, Testosterone, and the Drug Culture

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, the president and board chairman of VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

VADA is perhaps best known for working with both boxers and mixed martial arts fighters on a voluntary, state-of-the-art drug testing regimen, which includes random, unannounced blood and urine tests. Among the fighters currently working with VADA are boxer Nonito Donaire and MMA fighters B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald.

While this drug testing has been in most of the headlines regarding VADA, the main focus of the organization actually has been education. Towards this goal, VADA has just announced a partnership with the National Center for Drug Free Sport's Resource Exchange Center.

The Resource Exchange Center, also known as the REC Center, is free to access, and describes itself as "a subscription-based service that exists to provide up-to-date, confidential and accurate information on dietary supplements, dangerous and/or banned (prohibited) substances, and provide interactive tools and educational materials to empower athletes to make healthy and responsible decisions."

We spoke with Dr. Margaret Goodman by phone Tuesday about the latest developments for VADA, including this new partnership with the Resource Exchange Center.

"The main point of VADA is not to test athletes. It's to be an educational resource," said Dr. Goodman in this interview. "And certainly associating with Drug Free Sports's REC Center is going to be huge for us and huge for anybody that wants to take advantage of it."

The issue of the use of synthetic testosterone, which is an anabolic steroid, as a performance-enhancing drug is also making headlines involving athletes in the Olympics, baseball, MMA, and numerous other sporting events. Dr. Goodman noted that the potential harmful side effects of such usage, including damage to the liver, kidneys, heart, brain, and bones, are rarely discussed. She called on the Association of Boxing Commissions to establish a panel of experts to review cases where athletes have applied for a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone, instead of the individual, local commissions just making such decisions on their own.

We also discussed the battle to promote clean sport, combatting the growing drug culture, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Jake Varner

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with 2012 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling at 96 kg representing the U.S., Jake Varner.

A two-time NCAA Div. I wrestling champion at Iowa State, he currently trains at the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club in State College, Pennsylvania. The 26-year-old Jake Varner won his Olympic gold medal in his first appearance at an Olympic Games, after finishing third in the 2011 World Championships.

We spoke with Jake Varner Friday while he was in New York, just before he left for a celebration honoring U.S. Olympians in Iowa.

"Last year I got beat in a heartbreaker in the quarters and came back and took third, though," he said in this interview. "And I knew I had to make some changes, just real small things. And went back and made those adjustments. And I knew that I want to be an Olympic gold medalist, so I did whatever I needed to do to do that. And I just kept my eye on the prize and just stayed focused and just went out and wrestled."

In addition, Eddie opens with a commentary offering some preliminary thoughts on the proposed rule change in college wrestling in the U.S. which would create a national dual meet tournament system to crown a national team champion.
