No Holds Barred: Shelley Devine on the State of Women in Mixed Martial Arts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts writer, matchmaker, and trainer Shelley Devine.

Her focus has been on the advancing the role of women fighters in mixed martial arts, and that was also the focus of our discussion.

During 2010, opportunities for women fighters have grown in many MMA promotions. We discussed this development, along with what to expect in 2011 and beyond. We commented on the decision victory on November 24 by Tara LaRosa over Takayo Hashi to capture the DaMMAge Fight League 125-pound belt, and on what has been happening with many of the women fighters in Strikeforce, Bellator, M-1 Global, and other organizations. We discussed the potential for an all-women's MMA group to succeed, and some of the obstacles it will face. The differences between the cultures in Japan and America, and the level of acceptance of women fighters, was also addressed, as was some of the history of pioneering women MMA fighters, such as Becky Levi. Shelley Devine also explained why women, like men, have a "warrior spirit" and should be allowed to fight wherever men do, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, Andre Ward, Sakio Bika, Super Six World Boxing Classic

(Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the super middleweight title fights which will be held this Saturday, November 27, between Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham, and Andre Ward and Sakio Bika.

In the last fight of the third stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs), originally from Yerevan, Armenia, and now fighting out of Berlin, Germany, and Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KOs) of Nottingham, United Kingdom, will fight for the vacant WBC super middleweight title at the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland. Both have already earned spots in the semifinals of the Super Six, although the outcome of this fight will determine their seeding.

In a non-tournament fight but one where he has to defend his WBA super middleweight title, Andre Ward (22-0, 13 KOs) of Oakland, California, U.S., will fight Sakio Bika (28-4-2, 19 KOs) of Sydney, Australia, via Douala, Cameroon, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Ward has also earned a berth in the Super Six semifinals, along with Glen Johnson.

In the U.S., Showtime will telecast the Froch-Abraham fight on same-day tape-delay along with a live telecast of the Ward-Bika fight, at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). In the U.K., the Froch-Abraham fight will be on Primetime on pay-per-view, and also streamed live on http://www.primetimelive.co.uk. It will also be shown on ARD in Germany, as well as in other countries.

We spoke with Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, Andre Ward, and Sakio Bika on media teleconference calls to get their views on what to expect in their fights. We also discuss the coming conclusion of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, which remains the best thing in boxing today.

In addition, we address a number of major topics in boxing, including the stunning one-punch, second-round knockout by middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) over Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KOs) in their rematch Saturday, November 20. That should make Sergio Martinez the leading candidate for fighter of the year for 2010.

We also discuss the lightweight title fight between champion Juan Manuel Marquez and challenger Michael Katsidis in Las Vegas, also on Saturday, November 27, which will be shown on HBO in the U.S. And we comment on a several controversies in boxing, including the David Haye-Audley Harrison non-fight and the role of gambling, the latest legal problems of Manny Pacquiao, and more.

No Holds Barred: Tara LaRosa

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the top women mixed martial arts fighters in the world, Tara LaRosa.

She will next be fighting this Wednesday, November 24, on the debut card of the DaMMAge Fight League. This show will take place at the historic Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be available on an Internet pay-per-view on GoFightLive.

Her opponent in what is a 125-pound title fight will be Japanese fighter Takayo Hashi.

We spoke with Tara LaRosa Sunday night about this upcoming fight, her career, the growing opportunities for women fighters in mixed martial arts, and the cultural barriers which still exist in some quarters against women fighting in combat sports. We discussed her last fight, a split decision loss in a highly-acclaimed bout with Roxanne Modafferi in May 2010. We also discussed the roles of grappling and striking in mixed martial arts, especially since she comes primarily from a grappling background, the respect between most fighters in mixed martial arts, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie, Felicia Oh, Valerie Worthington

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman focuses primarily on grappling, as we once again speak with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts legend Renzo Gracie, and with grapplers and grappling trainers Felicia Oh and Valerie Worthington.

We spoke with Renzo Gracie at the MMA World Expo in New York as the Renzo Gracie Open No-Gi 2010 tournament was going on. We discussed this tournament, the potential for grappling to grow as a sport, and the key role of grappling in mixed martial arts. We also discussed the 2010 ADCC North American Championships, which take place Saturday, November 20, at Belleville High School in Belleville, New Jersey.

Felicia Oh and Valerie Worthington have just completed a whirlwind coast-to-coast trip where they conducted two Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling seminars in two straight days. The first was on Saturday, November 13, in Woodland Hills, California, and the second was with Emily Kwok on Sunday, November 14, in Princeton, New Jersey. Both seminars helped raise funds for local charities.

We spoke with Felicia Oh and Valerie Worthington about these seminars, the role of the Women's Grappling Camp, the growing participation of women in grappling, their work with charities, how grappling tournaments can better accommodate women grapplers, and more. You can find out more about all of these topics, including how to help these charities, at the Women's Grappling Camp blog.

No Holds Barred: Fabricio Werdum, Evgeni Kogan

(Photo of Fabricio Werdum, Eddie Goldman, and Marcelo Garcia, New York, Nov. 12, 2010, by Ricardo Liborio)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts fighter and champion grappler Fabricio Werdum, and Evgeni Kogan, the director of operations of M-1 Global. Both these interviews were conducted Saturday, November 13, at the MMA World Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in New York.

We spoke with Fabricio Werdum about his historic victory over Fedor Emelianenko on a Strikeforce-M-1 Global card in June, the first uncontested loss by Fedor in his ten-year mixed martial arts career. We discussed the technique he used to win that fight, using a triangle choke to submit Fedor in just 1:09 of the first round. He explained that he plans to fight three times in 2011 in Strikeforce, starting in March against either Fedor or Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and also compete at the 2011 ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships, in which he is a two-time defending champion in the +99 kg weight class.

The future of Fedor, who has one fight left on his contract with Strikeforce, was also a main focus of our discussion with Evgeni Kogan. While in New York, he met with Showtime, which televises Strikeforce cards in the U.S., about signing a new deal extending his contract. On this subject, Evgeni Kogan stated, "I think we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel" in those negotiations, although no new deal has yet been completed. We thus discussed the future of Fedor and co-promoting with Strikeforce, as well as the plans of M-1 Global to expand their own series of shows and tournaments in the U.S. and Europe.

We also begin by calling for a heavyweight tournament by Strikeforce in 2011, since they currently have the best four heavyweight fighters in mixed martial arts: Fabricio Werdum, Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, and Josh Barnett.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the most exciting, young mixed martial artists today, Golden Glory fighter Siyar Bahadurzada.

Also known as "Siyar the Great", he has a four-fight winning streak and is coming off a first-round knockout victory over Derrick Noble on October 16 at the Ultimate Glory 12 event in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. This fight was in the first round of their welterweight tournament, and he will next face veteran John Alessio on January 30 in Charleroi, Belgium, in the next round of this tournament. He explained why he decided to sign with Strikeforce, while continuing to fight in Europe. He discussed why he does not closely follow events in Afghanistan, where he was born. No Holds Barred: Lopez-Marquez, Johnson-Green, More on the Real State of Boxing

Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews some of the latest thrilling and galling developments in boxing.

We discuss the TKO victory by featherweight Juan Manuel Lopez over Rafael Marquez and the knockout by now-super middleweight Glen Johnson over Allan Green on Saturday, November 6, and what they mean for boxing. We analyze the rejuvenation of the Super Six World Boxing Classic super middleweight tournament on Showtime, and the implications of unbeaten IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute signing to fight on Showtime. We also expose the dangers that promoting the Lopez-Marquez fight as one which featured "the Puerto Rico-Mexico boxing rivalry" poses to both boxing and society in general. And we explain how more of the recent actions of the promoters, networks, and boxing media have only hastened boxing's doom, especially in the U.S.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Injuries, Violence, and the Need for Change in Combat Sports

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with former world kickboxing champion, former UFC and Extreme Fighting matchmaker, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti.

We continue our series of discussions on the critical issue of the increasing number of grave and major injuries in the combat and contact sports. As athletes get bigger, stronger, and faster than ever, and as they learn to use the rules of their sports to their advantage better, sports like American football, boxing, and mixed martial arts are becoming more dangerous and violent.

We thus examine what has been going on in these sports, what the consequences of their current direction will be, what changes they have or have not been making to protect their athletes, and what changes they should be making. We also discuss how the opponents of mixed martial arts are becoming more sophisticated (or, rather, less ignorant) in their opposition to legalizing the sport.

No Holds Barred: Coach Kevin Jackson Previews 2010-11 Iowa State Wrestling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion freestyle wrestler, who is starting his second season as head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones.

The 2010-2011 college wrestling season for the Cyclones officially starts this Saturday, November 6, with dual meets against Virginia Tech and Kent State in Salem, Virginia. On Sunday, November 7, the Hokie Open takes place, also in Salem, Virginia. The highly-anticipated annual showdown between Iowa State and the defending NCAA Div. I national champions, the Iowa Hawkeyes, takes place Friday, December 3, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

We spoke at length with Coach Jackson about what to expect this season, especially with the graduation of their two 2009-2010 national champions, Jake Varner and David Zabriskie. He explained the status of Andrew Long, who was a 2009-2010 runner-up as a freshman at 125 pounds, and who is not on the Cyclone roster at this time. We discussed who are expected to be the leaders on the Cyclone team this year, and which wrestlers are the likely starters, including two-time All-American Jon Reader. He also stated that witnessing live an Iowa State-Iowa wrestling dual meet is one of the greatest experiences a sports fan could ever have, and much more.
