No Holds Barred: John Perretti and Matt Phillips on the Origin of Mixed Martial Arts

On this special edition of No Holds Barred, which is show number 500 for this podcast, host Eddie Goldman is joined by the legendary matchmaker, martial artist, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti, and Matt Phillips of the Martial Arts Resource Group, who has been documenting and spreading the word about MMA online and offline since 1993.

There has been plenty written and said about the origin and meaning of the term "mixed martial arts", but, like much else about the history of this sport, most of it is inaccurate. We discuss the first documented, written use of the term "mixed martial arts", in a news release in September 1995 for the first show of Battlecade Extreme Fighting, of which John Perretti was a partner, producer, commentator, and matchmaker. John Perretti also explains that he had been using that term since 1979. We also discuss how this sport developed from featuring fights between martial artists of different styles, to one where, in theory at least, there were complete fighters who had mastered a variety of grappling and striking techniques. This lengthy, rich discussion also includes commentary on recent events, comparisons of the level of athletes in early and present-day fights, the predominant style of fighting today, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal, Strikeforce Preview

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the December 4 Strikeforce mixed martial arts card, and speaks with former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion "King" Mo Lawal.

The Strikeforce show will take place Saturday night, December 4, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime. The main event pits two veteran former champions against one another, as Dan Henderson faces Renato "Babalu" Sobral in a light heavyweight bout. Also, Paul Daley fights Scott Smith in a welterweight fight, Robbie Lawler fights Matt Lindland in a middleweight fight, and Antonio "Big Foot" Silva fights Mike Kyle in a heavyweight fight.

On a series of media conference calls, we got some quick assessments of what to expect in these fights from Dan Henderson, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Paul Daley, Scott Smith, Robbie Lawler, and Matt Lindland. We also heard a comment from Strikeforce CEO about the status of negotiations between Strikeforce, Showtime, and M-1 Global to extend the contract of the legendary heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko with Strikeforce.

On Wednesday, we spoke at length with "King" Mo Lawal. He gave us an estimate of when he will be able to return to Strikeforce following his rehab from surgery. We discussed the December 4 Strikeforce card and the main fights on it. Mo Lawal will also be a guest commentator on the December 11 HDNet telecast of the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan, and also a guest on MMA Live on ESPN2 late Thursday night, December 2. We discussed the K-1 card and why we expect it to be very exciting, as well as some of the developments in boxing this year, including why Sergio Martinez deserves to be named fighter of the year in that sport. We also discussed the great sport of wrestling, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Shelley Devine on the State of Women in Mixed Martial Arts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts writer, matchmaker, and trainer Shelley Devine.

Her focus has been on the advancing the role of women fighters in mixed martial arts, and that was also the focus of our discussion.

During 2010, opportunities for women fighters have grown in many MMA promotions. We discussed this development, along with what to expect in 2011 and beyond. We commented on the decision victory on November 24 by Tara LaRosa over Takayo Hashi to capture the DaMMAge Fight League 125-pound belt, and on what has been happening with many of the women fighters in Strikeforce, Bellator, M-1 Global, and other organizations. We discussed the potential for an all-women's MMA group to succeed, and some of the obstacles it will face. The differences between the cultures in Japan and America, and the level of acceptance of women fighters, was also addressed, as was some of the history of pioneering women MMA fighters, such as Becky Levi. Shelley Devine also explained why women, like men, have a "warrior spirit" and should be allowed to fight wherever men do, and much more.
