No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Concussions, Combat Sports, CTE, Doping, and Horses

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.

Our lengthy interview takes on some of the most difficult but pressing issues facing the combat sports, and even contact sports like American football.

What can be done to limit further the widespread doping in combat sports and the use of dangerous and banned substances? Why are these banned substances, such as anabolic steroids, so dangerous?

What will be the effect on these sports of very recent research, which Dr. Goodman calls "earth-shattering", regarding the dangers caused by concussions and the onset of the brain disease CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy? Can any combat or contact sport be considered relatively safe, or become relatively safe, for the health of the athletes? Given all this new research, how can it be argued that combat sports, including mixed martial arts, be legalized in jurisdictions like New York where it presently is not? And why are safety and doping standards better in the U.S. for race horses than human athletes?

We address head-on these and related issues which one day may threaten the very existence of these sports.

No Holds Barred: Lenne Hardt

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary former Pride Fighting Championships and current Dream announcer Lenne Hardt.

Lenne Hardt, although an American, has been living and working in Tokyo for many years. We spoke with her by Skype on Tuesday morning Japan time/Monday evening U.S. time.

In an amazing, lengthy interview, the multi-talented Lenne Hardt explained how she first got involved as a mixed martial arts announcer, although she had not been familiar with the sport prior to being hired by Pride. She discussed her unique, explosive announcing style, about which few who have heard it have no opinion. She recalled how it was to work at the mega-events produced by Pride, and also her reactions during the period of the demise of Pride and the scandals associated with that organization. She commented on the future of Dream. As head of the Lenne Hardt Jazz Band, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, she discussed the relationship between her announcing and jazz. She also discussed her upcoming announcing date for the Israel Fighting Championship on November 9 in Tel Aviv, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts fighter Jessica Aguilar.

After submitting Lynn Alvarez in the first round of their fight in the quarterfinals of the eight-woman, 115-pound tournament promoted by the Bellator Fighting Championships, Jessica Aguilar has advanced to the semifinals. Her opponent in the semis will be Zoila Frausto, in a fight which will take place at Bellator 31 on Thursday, September 30, at the L'Auberge du Lac Resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and will be televised live in the U.S. on Fox Sports Net.

We spoke with Jessica Aguilar, an American Top Team fighter, on Saturday about what to expect in her fight with Zoila Frausto. We discussed her grappling background, and how she is planning to use it in this fight. She explained the influence she is having on young women and girls who might want to enter the martial arts and combat sports, and how they should believe in themselves. We also discussed her relations with her mother, whom she adores, but who does not yet know that she is a professional fighter.

No Holds Barred: The Truth Only Hurts Liars and Crooks

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman offers another potpourri of wisdom and truth about recent events in the combat sports.

We start by explaining why it would be wise for the American premium cable network Showtime to add programming from M-1 Global to its mixed martial arts lineup, alongside Strikeforce events. MMA is rising in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and Showtime could get right in on the ground floor as this phenomenon continues. We also comment on the apparent resuscitation of the Super Six World Boxing Classic super middleweight tournament, with fights now scheduled for November 27 on Showtime between Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell, and Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham.

The Dream 16 mixed martial arts card was held Saturday, September 25, in Nagoya, Japan. We comment on the good and bad of that show, including the impressive technique of the fighters, which was counterposed by a series of purposeful, and typical, mismatches.

In addition, we comment on the latest doping scandal in mixed martial arts, this time involving UFC fighter Chael Sonnen, who was caught using steroids by the California State Athletic Commission in his recent fight with Anderson Silva. This once again highlights the need for the adoption of the protocols and methods of the World Anti-Doping Agency by the various athletic commissions regulating the combat sports, and their disgraceful failure to do so thus far.

We address the recent federal lawsuit between probably the two largest boxing promotions in the world, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, where Golden Boy alleges that Top Rank is guilty of racketeering and millions of dollars in fraud (which, of course Top Rank denies). And we ask the question: Who in boxing are the real crooks?

With a new governor taking office in New York in 2011 and the election campaign under way, we also discuss the scandalous failure of the politicians in New York to legalize and sanction mixed martial arts. We are attempting to survey all the gubernatorial candidates about their positions on this issue, to build grassroots pressure on them to legalize it when the next administration takes office.

No Holds Barred: Byron Byrd, Kenny Garner, Evgeni Kogan, Paula Romero, Keisha Morrisey, M-1 Selection

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the highly-successful M-1 Selection 2010 Americas Finals, which took place Saturday, September 18, at Bally's Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Tournaments were held over three events in five weight classes, featuring up-and-coming mixed martial arts prospects.

Right after the fights, we spoke with two of the most impressive fighters in this tournament, Byron Byrd and Kenny "Deuce" Garner, both of American Top Team. Byron Byrd won the light heavyweight finals by submitting Daniel Vizcaya with a triangle at 2:43 of the first round. Kenny Garner won the heavyweight finals by defeating Pat Bennett by TKO at 2:31, also in the first round.

In addition, we spoke at length with Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1 Global, about this event, its significance, the international plans for M-1 Global, their plans for a full slate of M-1 Challenge events in 2011 in the U.S. and Europe, the future of M-1 Global fighter and shareholder Fedor Emelianenko, their relationship with Strikeforce, their plans for pursuing an American television deal, and more.

Plus, we spoke with two veterans of the combat sports world, Paula Romero, the original "Queen of MMA", and Keisha Morrisey, the "Boxing Empress". Both have worked for many years in the combat sports, so we had a chance to get their seasoned opinions about this event and M-1 Global.

The next M-1 Global events will be held October 28 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and December 11 in Atlantic City, where fights to crown the first- ever M-1 Challenge world champions will take place.

No Holds Barred: Kenny Garner, M-1 Selection, Wrestling, and MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts fighter and former wrestler Kenny "Deuce" Garner, who will fight in the heavyweight finals of the M-1 Global Americas Selection tournament Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Bally's Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His opponent will be Pat Bennett, who had been a two-time Div. 3 All-American wrestler at SUNY-Brockport. We spoke with the colorful Kenny Garner by phone to get his view on how this fight, which is expected to feature a lot of action, will go.

We open the show by discussing some of the lessons from the recently-concluded World Championships of Wrestling, which took place September 6-12 in Moscow. This was one of the most exciting world championships in recent memory, and also saw the wrestlers using some amazing techniques, but this event got little attention outside the wrestling community. We explain some of the reasons why, and offer some suggestions.

In addition, we squarely address the myth that wrestling is a "boring" sport. While some wrestlers may wrestle a boring style, the philosophy behind the sport emphasizes seeking dominance. We comment on this issue both regarding wrestling as a sport, and wrestling and wrestlers in mixed martial arts, borrowing some advice from wrestling legend Dan Gable.

No Holds Barred: The Bad News Never Ends in Boxing

Photo: TMZ.com

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the latest round of scandals, corruption, tragedies, and absurdities in the sport of boxing.

We examine the rapid decomposition of what had been the best thing in boxing, the Showtime Super Six World Boxing Classic super middleweight tournament, where all three fights in stage three of that tournament, and the tournament itself, appear to be in jeopardy. We discuss the crises facing boxers after they leave the limelight, including Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, and Mike Tyson, none of whom boxing has found a place for after their best days in the ring were gone, and even for current top boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., the latest darling of the scandal and gossip mongers.

And we analyze what may turn out to be the biggest threats both to the athletes and the sports themselves for the contact and combat sports: the brain damage caused by concussions in these sports, and the onset of the brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

We also preview the junior middleweight fight between 39-year-old Shane Mosley and 29-year-old Sergio Mora, which takes place Saturday, September 18, in Los Angeles, and which will be telecast live in the U.S. on HBO pay-per-view. We hear comments from both Mosley and Mora from a recent media conference call, to which all concerned about the combat sports should listen.

No Holds Barred: Hit or Miss? Shark Fights 13 Review with Steve Nelson

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the Shark Fights 13 mixed martial arts card with Steve Nelson, the founder of the USWF (Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation), who covered this show for No Holds Barred from cageside. Shark Fights 13 was held Saturday, September 11, at the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas, and telecast live on pay-per-view.

We had a lengthy and detailed discussion Sunday afternoon about this overwhelmingly well-received show. We analyzed the fights on this card, including the late stoppage in the exciting Houston Alexander-Sokoudjou fight, and the many upsets. We discussed the telecast, including the colorful and controversial commentary by Don Frye and Bas Rutten. And we examined what this all may mean, both positive and negative, for the future and positioning of Shark Fights. This is an in-depth analysis of this event, which its promoters hope will establish Shark Fights as a major MMA organization.

No Holds Barred: Steve Nelson Previews Shark Fights 13

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with former mixed martial arts fighter and wrestler, the founder of the USWF (Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation), and current wrestling coach Steve Nelson. He will be covering for No Holds Barred the mixed martial arts pay-per-view event Shark Fights 13.

This card takes place Saturday, September 11, in Steve's hometown, the great fight town of Amarillo, Texas, at the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum. The main event will feature Keith Jardine facing Shark Fights light heavyweight champion Trevor Prangley in a non-title bout.

This will be the first attempt at a pay-per-view telecast by Shark Fight Promotions, and our discussion examined the prospects for success for this relatively young promotion, which was founded in 2007. We analyzed the huge risk they are taking by spending a great deal of money to put together this show, what they have to do at least to break even, and the chances of them doing so.

We also discussed the fight card, which generally seems to have evenly-matched fights. Besides the Jardine-Prangley fight, the televised card features Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou fighting Houston Alexander in a light heavyweight bout, Jorge Masvidal fighting Paul Daley in a welterweight bout, Joey Villasenor fighting Danillo Villafort in a middleweight bout, and Brock Larson fighting Tarec Saffiedine in a welterweight bout.

In addition, we commented on how this promotion is building this show by emphasizing respect for, and among, all the fighters.

No Holds Barred: Bloodstain Lane of Team Takeover

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Bloodstain Lane of Team Takeover.

Bloodstain Lane, who is a lifelong and passionate fan of the combat sports, has been attracting much attention of late with his raw, outspoken, colorful, and controversial critiques of many of the most powerful figures in mixed martial arts. While he is admittedly not a journalist, his commentaries on his YouTube videos and on the Team Takeover forum have elicited reactions from both insiders and fans all around the world.

We spoke with the New York-based Bloodstain Lane Wednesday evening at a Hooters restaurant in Manhattan. We had a lengthy discussion about his very pronounced views on the state of mixed martial arts, including the promotions, the media, and the fans. While this interview does contain some explicit language, the depth of his analysis generally reflects the increasingly educated views of a new breed of mixed martial arts fans who think for themselves and can sort out the gems in MMA from the junk.

No Holds Barred: MFC Lightweight Champ Antonio McKee

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the Maximum Fighting Championship lightweight champion, the always-outspoken Antonio McKee.

He will be defending his title against Brazilian submission expert Luciano Azevedo on Friday, September 10, in the co-main event of the MFC 26: Retribution card at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This mixed martial arts card will be televised live on HDNet Fights throughout North America.

The 40-year-old Antonio McKee, who has an extensive background in wrestling, has not lost a fight in over seven years. However, he has won most of those fights by decision, by taking his opponents down, outwrestling them, outstriking them both standing and on the ground, but not finishing them. Some people have criticized this effective and technical style as not exciting, so he has vowed to retire after this fight if it is perceived as being a "boring" decision, even if he wins the fight.

We thus spoke with Antonio McKee Saturday about this fight and what to expect. He critiqued the prevailing culture in mixed martial arts, especially in North America, which has labeled his winning style as "boring". He also explained why he believes that he has to retire if his September 10 fight is once again criticized as such, and what his plans are for coaching and training athletes. He ripped into what he believes to be a very prevalent double standard for Black athletes in mixed martial arts, both in terms of compensation, perception, and opportunities. He also recounted his experiences with the now-defunct International Fight League, and much more in a very candid interview.

No Holds Barred: Jorge Santiago on his MMA Fight of the Year Candidate

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with American Top Team mixed martial arts fighter and Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago.

In a fight being hailed as epic, historic, and a certainty for the 2010 MMA fight of the year, Jorge Santiago successfully defended his title by stopping Kazuo Misaki in the fifth and last round of the main event of Sengoku 14 on Sunday, August 22, 2010, in Tokyo, Japan.

After being down on the scorecards, Jorge Santiago came back with a furious attack at the very end of the fourth round and all throughout the fifth round, forcing the corner of Misaki to throw in the towel with only about 30 seconds remaining in the fight. This fight was originally broadcast live in the U.S. on HDNet, and has also been posted on YouTube. This see-saw, non-stop battle was a rematch of their first fight from January 2009, which was also won by Jorge Santiago with a come-from-behind performance in the fifth round.

We spoke Friday afternoon about this great fight, and analyzed its many highlights and ups and downs. While he has long been a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, we discussed his development as a standup fighter and the notable improvements in his striking. We also discussed the differences between fighting in the U.S. and Japan, and how fighters are allowed to "do more" in terms of utilizing various grappling and striking techniques in Japan than in the U.S. He reviewed his growth as a fighter since fighting in UFC in 2006 and Strikeforce in 2007, and stated that he once again wants to fight in the U.S., where he has lived for many years, while still fighting in Japan. And we discussed when he wants to return to action, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Gary Abbott of USA Wrestling Previews 2010 World Wrestling Championships

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman and Gary Abbott, the Director of Communications of USA Wrestling, preview the 2010 World Wrestling Championships.

This event takes place Monday, September 6, through Sunday, September 12, at the Sports Centre Olimpiskiy in Moscow, Russia.

USA Wrestling has a special section on the World Championships on TheMat.com.

Our interview previewed this event by focusing upon many of the top and champion wrestlers from around the world in the three styles which will be contested: men's and women's freestyle wrestling, and Greco-Roman wrestling. We discussed the U.S. entries this year, and their chances of winning medals against the international competition.

We also discussed the significance of this event being held in Russia this year, the always-controversial rules of wrestling, the annual predictions of international wrestling journalists of gold medal winners (including both of us), how to follow this event live, and more.

No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts legend Renzo Gracie.

We spoke Tuesday afternoon at the Renzo Gracie Academy New York City about his most recent mixed martial arts fight, at UFC 112 on April 10, 2010, in Abu Dhabi, against Matt Hughes. We discussed some of his greatest and most memorable fights, including his 1995 World Combat Championship tournament win, his 1996 victory over Oleg Taktarov, and his 2000 loss to Kazushi Sakuraba. He explained why "grappling is the backbone of MMA" and the key role played by leading figures in Abu Dhabi in helping both grappling and mixed martial arts. He commented on how he misses the now-defunct International Fight League (IFL). He also argued that New York should finally sanction mixed martial arts and provide more opportunities for the people in New York, including the youth.

We also discussed the Renzo Gracie Open No-Gi 2010 tournament, which takes place Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, at the second annual MMA WORLD EXPO. This is an open grappling tournament with numerous divisions, and will be a highlight of this EXPO.
