No Holds Barred: Frank Shamrock and Scott Ross on Culture, Art, and Philosophy of Mixed Martial Arts

(Frank Shamrock and Eddie Goldman, New York, July 1, 2010.)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents two fascinating interviews aimed at thinking people which focus on the culture and philosophy of mixed martial arts.

Our first interview is with Frank Shamrock, the top mixed martial arts fighter of the 1990s, who just announced his retirement as a fighter this past Saturday. We spoke with him Thursday, July 1, while he was in New York. Besides continuing as a mixed martial arts announcer on Showtime, he is expanding his group of Shamrock MMA schools, including planning to open branches in New York and elsewhere on the East Coast of the U.S.

Most importantly, Frank wants to promote MMA to the youth as a part of the martial arts. The younger generation does not know that MMA is martial arts, he said, and that upsets him. The purpose of the sport is not for some "knuckleheads" to fight to hurt people and get laid, he argued, but to build respect, and develop the mind, sprit, and body of people.

We also discussed the movement to create some type of union or association for fighters, which he has supported for some time. But, he cautioned, "It's going to come down to the fighters saying no," and not enough of them have done so thus far.

We also discussed why Strikeforce should next have Fabricio Werdum face their heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, the future of Strikeforce on CBS, the great potential for Strikeforce light heavyweight champion "King" Mo Lawal, why real "champion" fighters should not have participated in a brawl as occurred on the April 17 Strikeforce show, why his 1999 fight with Tito Ortiz was the high point of his fighting career, and more.

Our senior correspondent and colleague, the legendary former matchmaker and world champion kickboxer John Perretti, spoke on Monday, June 28, with Scott Ross, a pioneer in the field of digital media, the founder and former chairman and CEO of Digital Domain, and a fan of mixed martial arts.

Having worked for three decades at the center of the mainstream entertainment industry, Scott Ross has become disturbed at the current direction of the culture of mixed martial arts. "It's lost its direction in terms of its intellectual and philosophical approach," he said. He cited the devolution of the sport and the absence of any philosophy in it today, and decried that it has become just about "beating people up." It is marketed to people "who accept whatever Madison Avenue serves up," some of whom behaved with "a sense of redneck-Nazism," and is no longer about sport, but "about specter." With the culture of this sport "way out of hand," something, he argued, must be done to change it.

We also open the show with news about two funds which have been set up to aid the family of Michael "Tree" Kirkham, the mixed martial arts fighter who died June 28, from injuries he suffered in a state-sanctioned fight on June 26, in Aiken, South Carolina. You can find out more information about contributing to these funds here and here.

No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro on Werdum, Jiu-Jitsu Triumphant, and Good and Bad of 2010 Mundials

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Kid Peligro.

We opened with a discussion about the key role of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the submission victory by Fabricio Werdum over Fedor Emelianenko. Werdum, a two-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion and a two-time ADCC world champion, defeated Fedor with a triangle choke in just 69 seconds in the main event on the Strikeforce-M-1 Global mixed martial arts card held Saturday, June 26, in San Jose, California. We analyzed the technique used by Werdum in this historic victory, handing Fedor his first real defeat in mixed martial arts in his storied career.

We next discussed the good and the bad of the 2010 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, also known as the Mundials. This event, the most prestigious in the world in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, took place June 3-6 at California State University Long Beach. At it, Roger Gracie once again dominated all his opponents, winning both in his weight and the absolute divisions. Many people, however, emerged from that event with major criticisms of some current trends in jiu-jitsu which were apparent at it, including the tendency for some top competitors not to try submissions. We also focused on the future of jiu-jitsu and grappling, the key role played by many people in Abu Dhabi in supporting and developing these sports, and much more.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Werdum-Fedor, Jiu-Jitsu, and Death of MMA Fighter Michael Kirkham

(The late Michael Kirkham, from his Facebook profile.)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our senior correspondent, the legendary former matchmaker John Perretti.

We spoke Monday night about the tragic breaking news reports that mixed martial arts fighter Michael Kirkham, after his first professional bout on Saturday, June 26, in Aiken, South Carolina, had died from of a brain hemorrhage Monday morning. We discussed footage of Kirkham on YouTube from an amateur fight he had, and lost, in April. John Perretti commented that Kirkham did not show the skills necessary to become a pro fighter. We also discussed the lax medical requirements for fighters in the state of South Carolina, and how this was the kind of tragedy we have been warning about as mixed martial arts becomes a less safe sport than it had been previously.

Earlier Monday we had a lengthy discussion about the submission victory by Fabricio Werdum over Fedor Emelianenko at the Strikeforce-M-1 Global mixed martial arts card Saturday, June 26, in San Jose, California. We discussed how Fedor was defeated by a move from "Jiu-Jitsu 101". We discussed the place of Fedor in mixed martial arts history, the devolution of the heavyweight division which he dominated for many years, why there should not be an immediate rematch between Fedor and Werdum, how this fight highlights the key role of grappling in mixed martial arts, the impressive performance on this card by Cung Le, why fighters like Brock Lesnar do not have a "complete toolbox", and much more.

No Holds Barred: Bob Carson On Werdum Defeating Fedor, and Implications for MMA

Photo: Esther Lin/Strikeforce

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Bob Carson about the stunning submission victory by Fabricio Werdum over Fedor Emelianenko at the Strikeforce-M-1 Global mixed martial arts card Saturday, June 26, in San Jose, California. Bob Carson is also the host of Carson's Corner.

In the main event, after Fedor had dropped him with a right hand and followed him to the ground, Werdum, a two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and ADCC world champion, caught Fedor in an armbar-triangle combination. Unable to escape, Fedor tapped out at just 1:09 of the first round.

Right after this fight, we discussed its implications for the careers of Fedor and Werdum, for the future of Strikeforce and M-1 Global, and for the mixed martial arts in general. We noted that a legend and the best MMA fighter of the 1990s, Frank Shamrock, had announced his retirement as a fighter on this show, and now the best MMA fighter of the first decade of this century, Fedor, had gone down to defeat in its second decade. We discussed the technique used by Werdum in this short fight, and how very basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is still very effective in mixed martial arts.

We discussed how this fight hurt Strikeforce and M-1 Global, and criticized a number of blunders made by both organizations in their marketing and media relations. We also ripped those in the media who will purposely fail to put the loss by Fedor into its proper historical perspective and use it to denigrate his entire career, and how this is related to the passivity and lack of critical thinking so prevalent in the U.S. today. We discussed how the best televised mixed martial arts product in the U.S. is now coming from the Bellator Fighting Championships, and much more.
