No Holds Barred: John Perretti Critiques Strikeforce Miami

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and senior correspondent John Perretti about the highly disappointing Strikeforce mixed martial arts card, held January 30 in Sunrise, Florida, and televised in the U.S. on Showtime.

In a blistering interview, we discuss why this card epitomizes how not to run a mixed martial arts promotion. We target the selection of many of the fighters who were highlighted on this televised card, the lack of quality matchmaking, the often poor technique, the atrocious announcing, the horrible refereeing, the absence of submission attempts, the weak chins of so many fighters in mixed martial arts, the failure to develop new fighters, the related shortcut of bringing in competitors for so-called entertainment value, the continued misuse of the Internet by the suits running this organization, and more.

Despite some impressive performances by a few of the fighters, overall this card is indicative of "the devolution of mixed martial arts," stated John Perretti. You can hear just how and why on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Bob Carson Previews Strikeforce Miami

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Bob Carson, who is also the host of Carson's Corner. We preview the Strikeforce: Miami mixed martial arts card, which takes place this Saturday, January 30, at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, near Miami. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

In our lengthy discussion, we break down the strengths and weaknesses of the main fighters on this card, which features two title fights.

The main event has Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Nick Diaz facing the Dream welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis for the Strikeforce welterweight title. The Strikeforce women's 145-pound champion Cris "Cyborg" Santos of the legendary Chute Boxe team from Curitiba, Brazil, defends her belt against the versatile Marloes Coenen of Deventer, Holland.

Also on the televised card, Robbie Lawler returns to Strikeforce against Melvin Manhoef (24-6-1) in a middleweight fight which is expected to be a slugfest. Former NAIA college wrestling champion Bobby Lashley makes his Strikeforce debut against veteran Wes Sims. And in a controversial bout, 47-year-old former football star Herschel Walker makes his MMA debut against Greg Nagy of Phoenix, Arizona.

Also on the card, former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron takes on veteran Joe Riggs. That fight will be streamed live and for free on the EA Sports MMA web site at http://www.easportsmma.com.

As usual, we hold nothing back in analyzing what to expect on this overall worthwhile card, which we do recommend people view. We highlight the expected good and the bad of this card, including the potential perils of the fighting debut of the 47-year-old Walker. We also discuss the pros and cons of the build-up for this card, including a weak use of the Internet and social networking by Strikeforce and Showtime. And we also comment upon the business state of mixed martial arts, as well as the preposterous and largely unchallenged claim by UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar that he was recently cured of an illness by a "miracle".

No Holds Barred: John Perretti Interviews Karl List, Part Two, and More Filth from Boxing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host and producer Eddie Goldman presents the second in a series of interviews by our colleague and senior correspondent John Perretti with the noted fitness expert and personal trainer Karl List.

Karl List is a fitness expert with over 20 years of experience as a personal trainer, and was a natural (drug-free) bodybuilding champion. He and his wife and business partner, Jodi Friedman List, are the co-owners of List Integrated Systematic Training. Their clients are trained at the world-famous Gold's Gym in Venice, California, where Karl is the only trainer who maintains a client base of personal trainers.

In that interview, John Perretti and Karl List discuss the prevalence of injuries from the use of barbells and bench pressing, what is functional strength for athletes, why training methods are poor selections for athletes, why free body exercises are important, why heavyweight boxers like the Klitschko brothers have bad legs, why the back squat is the king of exercises, how to do it properly, and more.

Before that interview, we open with a commentary on some of the latest filth in the past week from boxing. We discuss the very predictable results from the January 23 Madison Square Garden card shown on HBO, the attempt to reinstate Antonio Margarito after his license was revoked for attempting to load his gloves last year in a fight with Shane Mosley, whether boxing would have been better off if promoter Bob Arum had been banned from boxing after admitting that he had paid bribes in the IBF scandal, and more.

No Holds Barred: Felicia Oh on Women's Grappling Camp, and Everything Else

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the grappling star and double gold medalist at the 2009 FILA Grappling World Championships in December, Felicia Oh.

We started our lengthy discussion with a preview of the upcoming Women's Grappling Camp.

This takes place January 25-29, 2010, at Big John McCarthy Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia, California.

This camp is open to women of all levels of experience and expertise, from first-timers and beginners all the way up to world champions. Besides training on the mat, there will seminars on many topics. The atmosphere at the camp will actually be like a camp, as opposed to a typical training seminar. The camp promises, "All girls, all grappling, all the time."

This interview was also not your typical pre-event rundown. Besides previewing the Women's Grappling Camp, we delved into a wide-ranging series of topics including how women on the mat must deal with the male-dominated world of combat sports, the type of women who train in jiu-jitsu and grappling, the growth of women's grappling, the cultural barriers to the participation of women in combat sports, her own observations on her decision to focus so much of her life on jiu-jitsu and grappling, the role of planning in life, the good and bad of technology, how jiu-jitsu is very cerebral, why intellectuals should train in combat sports, the future of the media, why neither of us have any tattoos, and even more.

This is another incredible discussion, and we have it for you right here on No Holds Barred.

Also, Felicia Oh has also been nominated for the Dec. 2009 U.S. Women's Athlete of the Month in an online poll organized by the U.S. Olympic Committee. You can vote for her here. Voting ends January 18.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Igor Zinoviev-Mario Sperry Fight from Extreme Fighting 1

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and senior correspondent, the legendary martial artist and matchmaker John Perretti, about one of the greatest fights in mixed martial arts history: the clash between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu great Mario Sperry and then-little-known Russian judoka Igor Zinoviev at Battlecade Extreme Fighting 1 on November 18, 1995, in Wilmington, North Carolina.

John Perretti, who was both the matchmaker and a television analyst for Extreme Fighting, called this back-and-forth battle "one of the most heroic fights in mixed martial arts history." A clip of the ending of this fight can be seen here.

We discuss this fight in-depth, place it in its historical context, and provide inside revelations previously not reported.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Mayweather-Pacquiao Cancellation and Future of Drug Testing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman about the cancellation of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight after the two camps failed to agree on how to conduct the prefight drug testing, and what should be the future of drug testing for the combat sports. Dr. Goodman is a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.

Among the many topics we discussed was why the last-minute compromise offered by the Mayweather camp, for an end to blood testing 14 days before the fight, would have been inadequate in preventing dope cheating. We discussed various methods widely used by dope cheats, including the use of EPO, and how many athletes beat even the current random tests. We stressed the need for regulatory and sanctioning bodies in the combat sports to update their antiquated procedures if they are serious about dealing with this issue. We also discussed the use of performance enhancing drugs in other sports such as baseball.

We discussed how the collapse of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is yet another milestone in the collapse of boxing, and how other sports like mixed martial arts are benefiting from it. But we also discussed how the issue of doping in mixed martial arts is not being properly addressed and must be, lest that sport sooner or later suffers a similar fate as boxing. And, of course, we skewered most (but not all) of the combat sports media, which still refuse to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth on these issues.

We closed with some suggestions for those who are honest and serious about cleaning up these sports to work together to intensify the education of the public on these issues, and to influence policy-making regarding drug testing.

Will all these anti-doping efforts eventually succeed? A lot depends on how the public and the fans react, and this discussion helps outline a course of action for those who truly want clean sport.

No Holds Barred: Travis Tygart of U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Mayweather-Pacquiao and Drug Testing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the issue of drug testing and the apparently cancelled Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight with Travis Tygart, the chief executive officer of USADA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

USADA, which sees its mission as to "preserve the value and integrity of athletic competition through just initiatives that prevent, deter and detect violations of true sport", was initially approached to provide information about drug testing to the organizers of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. USADA is the official anti-doping agency for Olympic, Pan American, and Paralympic sport in the U.S.

According to numerous news reports, plans to hold this fight March 13 were scrapped when the Pacquiao camp refused to agree to the demands of the Mayweather camp for Olympic-style, random blood testing of both fighters for banned substances.

In a lengthy interview, Travis Tygart explains why only conducting urine testing for banned and dangerous substances is ineffective, why blood testing is needed to test for substances like human growth hormone, and why this is necessary to protect the clean athletes while catching the dope cheats. We discuss the need for random, out-of-competition testing, as well as debunk the various excuses given against blood testing, such as it weakening an athlete, the expense of the test, their safety, etc.

"Our clean athletes are demanding for more testing," he stated in this interview.

Defending the rights of these clean athletes is paramount, which is why all supporters of honest sport should also demand that these state-of-the-art testing procedures be utilized in professional sports worldwide.

No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson on Iowa State Wrestling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones.

We had spoken with Coach Jackson at the beginning of the 2009-10 college wrestling season when Iowa State was ranked second in the NCAA Division I in the preseason polls. After two months of competition, Iowa State is still ranked second, only trailing their long-time rivals, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

In a lengthy phone interview, we tracked the progress of Iowa State thus far in their quest for a national championship. We discussed Iowa State's defending NCAA champion and three-time NCAA finalist, senior Jake Varner, who is the top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds; the emergence of redshirt freshman Andrew Long at 125 pounds, who just defeated third-ranked Zach Sanders of Minnesota, 8-4, in the Iowa State-Minnesota dual meet January 3; and the performances of highly-ranked wrestlers Nick Gallick at 141, David Zabriskie at heavyweight, Jon Reader at 165, and Nick Fanthorpe at 133.

We also discussed the rash of injuries this season in college wrestling; Iowa State's narrow 18-16 dual meet loss to Iowa in December; how the Cyclones are improving their marketing and presentation of their meets; how wrestlers like Mo Lawal who now fight in mixed martial arts are viewed by some; and the next task for the Cyclones, the two-day, 16-team tournament involving most of the top teams in the U.S. at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, January 9 and 10, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa; and more.

No Holds Barred: Jay Hieron

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the most talented fighters in the mixed martial arts, the former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron.

After the IFL ceased operations, however, Jay has had a rocky road finding fights, despite being the reigning IFL champion when it folded and not having lost a fight since winning that title in December 2007.

Now he has signed with Strikeforce, and after a successful debut with that company in August, his next fight is likely to be on their January 30 card in Sunrise, Florida, near Miami.

In a lengthy interview, we spoke with Jay Hieron about all this and what is next for him. We discussed his views on why a fight between him and Nick Diaz fell through, and when he believes they may finally meet. We spoke about how he has managed to persevere in the face of so many challenges in his career, including mistakes he made early on. We discussed his development from being a wrestler in mixed martial arts to becoming a complete fighter, and much more.

Jay Hieron believes that 2010 will be his year, and you can hear just why on this edition of No Holds Barred.
