No Holds Barred: Joseph Agbeko-Yonnhy Perez Preview; Jens Sejer Andersen of Play the Game on Corruption in Sport

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins with a preview of the IBF bantamweight title fight between champion Joseph Agbeko (27-1, 22 KOs) and unbeaten mandatory challenger Yonnhy Perez (19-0, 14 KOs), which will be held Saturday, October 31, in Las Vegas, and televised on Showtime in the U.S. We spoke about this fight with both Joseph Agbeko and Yonnhy Perez on a media conference call.

We next turn to the persistent issue of corruption in sport, including in the combat sports, with Jens Sejer Andersen, the Director of Play the Game.

Play the Game is an international organization based in Denmark which, according to its web site, "aims to strengthen the basic ethical values of sport and encourage democracy, transparency and freedom of expression in world sport."

They have recently issued a "Call for action against all forms of corruption in sport", which has been signed by numerous leading sports figures and journalists from around the world.

"Corruption in sport is seemingly endemic," Jens Sejer Andersen told us, and we thus had a lengthy discussion about how to fight it. We examined what Play the Game is doing to help this struggle against corruption in sport both in the Olympic movement and in professional sports, why so many who do so end up receiving negative reactions, problems in Olympic boxing and wrestling, and the role of gambling in spreading corruption. We also discussed the "Call for action against all forms of corruption in sport" and the need for the establishment of an international agency to fight corruption in sport, similar to what the World Anti-Doping Agency has done to fight doping. And we explained what fans, athletes, media, and everyone else around the world can do to fight corruption in sport.

Once again, you will not find this kind of discussion about the fight against corruption in sport in most places in the media, but focusing on these issues is precisely what you can expect at No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Larry Hazzard on the Continuing Evolution of MMA and Boxing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Larry Hazzard Sr. about the development of the combat sports of mixed martial arts and boxing.

Serving for over two decades as commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, Larry Hazzard played a key role in the establishment of unified rules for both boxing and mixed martial arts. He is now a senior official at the IBF (International Boxing Federation), with the title Personal Assistant to the President and Chairman of Officials Education, Development and Supervision. He also is the founder of C.O.M.B.A.T.T. - Community Organization Making Boxing Alternatives Today for Tomorrow, in Newark, New Jersey, which provides both boxing and fitness training along with educational and recreational activities for at-risk and inner-city youths.

With such a long history of accomplishments and being a pioneer in so many aspects of the combat sports, our discussion blended history with current analysis about boxing and mixed martial arts together.

Among the many topics in this lengthy discussion, we spoke about the key role he played in developing the unified rules for mixed martial arts in 2000 and 2001, and convincing the Nevada commission to sanction the sport in 2001. We discussed his role at C.O.M.B.A.T.T. and the importance of training in the combat sports for youth. We analyzed many of the problems in boxing which have led to its diminution into a niche sport. We talked about the issue of fighter safety in both sports, as well as his innovation in bringing instant replay to the combat sports.

After numerous other topics, our discussion ended with a breaking news story. The major boxing sanctioning organizations are seriously preparing for a summit to address jointly the problems in boxing and see if they can finally work together to start to solve them. The plan is now for this summit to be held in January 2010, and probably in Mexico, where the WBC is headquartered. As a top official in the IBF, Larry Hazzard stated that the IBF gives their full support to this effort, and that boxing "has to be fixed by us." We will definitely closely follow these important developments.

This is the kind of discussion which any real aficionado of the combat sports will really love, where we approach the issues in the combat sports of boxing and mixed martial arts together. They are much more interrelated than many people realize, and the contributions of Larry Hazzard to both sports are but one more example of that. It thus was one of the most enlightening discussions ever on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Future of MMA Panel, Day One, and Re-Legalization of MMA in New York

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the main part of the "Future of MMA" panel held Saturday, October 24, at the MMA World Expo in New York City.

The panelists on the first day of this two-day event and discussion were Melvina Lathan, chairwoman of the New York State Athletic Commission; attorney Michael Kim, who has been active in the legislative battle to re-legalize mixed martial arts in the State of New York; and Eddie Goldman. The discussion was moderated by Keisha Morrisey. We will post the audio from the second day of this panel shortly.

This is the discussion which just about everyone in the mixed martial arts and combat sports has been anticipating, since the sanctioning and return of mixed martial arts to New York would obviously be so important to the growth and health of the sport. But we also delved into the history of the incredible and complex struggle to legalize MMA, and to overturn this regressive 1997 law banning MMA in New York, which still stands today. We also voiced many criticisms of the structure of mixed martial arts today, while remaining firm in our support for its sanctioning in New York.

No Holds Barred: Mark Schultz, Rhadi Ferguson, Reviews of MMA World Expo, Dream, UFC

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins with a commentary on the MMA World Expo, the first such event in New York City, which was held Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, at the Javits Center. This event was deemed a success by just about everyone involved, and you will get an idea why.

We then continue our commentary by discussing and comparing the levels of technique, action, and drama in the Dream and UFC mixed martial arts events of this past weekend. If the pursuit of happiness, a goal in life espoused for millennia, from Aristotle to the United States Declaration of Independence, is our measure, Dream was the certain winner in this respect.

We next present two of the several interviews we conducted at the MMA World Expo, with more to come.

We spoke with wrestling legend Mark Schultz, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion in freestyle wrestling for the U.S., and a three-time NCAA Div. I wrestling champion at Oklahoma. He is also 1-0 in mixed martial arts, and he explained why some records which indicate otherwise are inaccurate. We discussed wrestling, the role of grappling, MMA, and more in a candid interview.

And we spoke with Dr. Rhadi Ferguson, a 2004 U.S. Olympian in judo, and a motivational speaker, trainer, and coach. We discussed the role of grappling in mixed martial arts, his approach to grappling, and much more.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal Signs with Strikeforce

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the undefeated mixed martial arts fighter and freestyle and college wrestling champion, "King" Mo Lawal.

With a record of 5-0 in mixed martial arts, last week "King" Mo signed a four-fight deal to compete in Strikeforce over the next 18 months.

In another comprehensive interview, Mo Lawal spoke with us about mixed martial arts, boxing, and a little wrestling. He explained why he signed with Strikeforce and when he is likely to fight next. We discussed his options about fighting as a heavyweight or light heavyweight, and how he believes he matches up with top fighters including top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi. We again discussed the sport of boxing, including the Carl Froch-Andre Dirrell and Arthur Abraham-Jermain Taylor fights from the first round of the super middleweight tournament this past Saturday, October 17. He discussed his love of Japan as a place to fight, and commented on the unwarranted negative views some people have of mixed martial arts fighters who are not in the UFC, and of those fighters who are past their primes. He reiterated his desire to compete in pro boxing, analyzed the reason for the longevity of the boxing career of 44-year-old Bernard Hopkins, and explained that he has no plans to return to wrestling now. He also talked about the plans to popularize Team Thirsty, which includes himself, Daniel Cormier, Rashad Evans, and Shawn Bunch, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Bjorn Rebney of Bellator Fighting Championships on Upcoming Seasons Two and Three

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Bjorn Rebney, the founder and CEO of the mixed martial arts company, the Bellator Fighting Championships.

After a successful 2009 debut season on the Spanish-language ESPN Deportes network, it was announced Tuesday, October 20, that Bellator would be returning for their second and third seasons in 2010, on an alliance of Fox Sports Net, NBC, and the Spanish-language Telemundo network, in the U.S.

Beginning Thursday, April 8, 2010, Fox Sports Net will telecast a 12-week series of live Bellator fight shows in prime time in each market. Each Saturday night in the overnight time slot, NBC will air a 30-minute highlight show from the live fights of that week. Telemundo will also air a highlight show every Saturday night, from midnight to 1 AM local time. The third season for Bellator is scheduled to commence in August 2010.

In a lengthy interview, we discussed with Bjorn Rebney this step forward for Bellator. We examined the media aspects in depth, including when and how each network would telecast these shows, as well as their Internet strategy, including possible posting of fights on the NBC-Fox video site Hulu. We discussed the return of their champion fighters for the next seasons, the continuing use of the tournament format to determine number one contenders for their titles, why Bellator is very open to co-promoting events with other mixed martial arts companies, the likeliest locations for their 2010 events, and much more.

This new deal for seasons two and three solidifies the position of the Bellator Fighting Championships in the mixed martial arts world, and this interview analyzes all the main points about this important development.

No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell Reviews Abraham-Taylor, Froch-Dirrell, and Rachael Cordingley

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Charles Farrell, the award-winning boxing writer and fight manager, about the somewhat disappointing first round of fights in the super middleweight tournament known as the World Boxing Classic, held Saturday, October 17.

In those fights, undefeated former middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs) won with a brutal twelfth-round knockout of former undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KOs) at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany, while WBC champion Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs) won an ugly split decision over previously unbeaten Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KOs) at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham, England.

We discussed these fights themselves; why Abraham emerged as the clear winner of all the fighters Saturday night; why the devastating knockout of Taylor, the third in his last five fights, should signal the end of his career as a boxer; how both Froch and Dirrell gave dismal performances, and the supposed controversy over the outcome of their fight; an evaluation of the next fight in this tournament, when Mikkel Kessler faces Andre Ward November 21 in Oakland, Calif., as well as the second and third rounds of this tournament; why, despite its less-than-inspiring start, the tournament could still be successful; how potential dropouts in the tournament could endanger it; why so many people remain so cynical and negative about everything in boxing, as happens in the last stages of a dying romantic relationship; and why so much of the boxing public is instead talking about Carl Froch's girlfriend, Rachael Cordingley.

No Holds Barred: Why Boxing Is A Bad Lover; Arthur Abraham-Jermain Taylor, Carl Froch-Andre Dirrell World Boxing Classic Previews

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by lamenting how the abject failure of the boxing establishment to adapt to the latest online video technology has made this sport the hardest combat sport to love.

The October 10 Juan Manuel Lopez-Rogers Mtagwa fight is widely being hailed as a Fight of the Year candidate, but was only televised on an independent pay-per-view in the U.S. It is now available for free on YouTube, although it was not posted by the promoters. Thus, as we explain, for fight fans to watch the great fights from around the world and to be able to afford to do so, they must be able to use sites like YouTube, SopCast, DeliCast, WWITV, TVU, Livestation, KeyHoleTV, and the MyP2P and AllP2P forums. We list the top fights around the world remaining for this season, and encourage fans to learn how to use the existing technology, even if the boxing promoters continue on their path to extinction.

This coming Saturday, October 17, the two opening fights in the highly-anticipated Super Six World Boxing Classic take place. This round-robin tournament pits six of the top super middleweights against each other, including the two top belt holders, four undefeated fighters, and three Europeans and three Americans. The winner will no doubt be recognized as the champion of the world in the super middleweight division.

On that date, undefeated former middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KOs) of Berlin, Germany, will face former undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs) of Little Rock, Ark., at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany. WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) of Nottingham, England, will fight Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KOs) of Flint, Mich., from the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham, England. These fights will be televised on Showtime in the U.S., Primetime pay-per-view on Sky in the UK, and ARD in Germany.

We spoke with these four fighters, Carl Froch and Andre Dirrell, and Arthur Abraham and Jermain Taylor, on recent media conference calls to get their views on their careers and what to expect in their fights October 17.

No Holds Barred: Tyron Woodley

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the unbeaten mixed martial arts fighter and two-time All-American wrestler and Big 12 wrestling champion from the University of Missouri, Tyron Woodley.

While many champion wrestlers have been competing in the mixed martial arts, few have become complete fighters who have mastered the major grappling and striking techniques which are the foundation of the mixed martial arts. In only four professional fights, however, Tyron Woodley has demonstrated that he is taking a different path. This former college wrestling star is striving not only to avoid submissions while adding striking to his wrestling, but also to be a total fighter.

In his most recent fight, on the September 25 Strikeforce Challengers show in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and televised in the U.S. on Showtime, Tyron Woodley faced a veteran mixed martial arts fighter, Zach Light, who also had a notable wrestling background. A native of the great wrestling state of Iowa, Zach Light had been a two-time high school state wrestling champion there as well as an All-American at Ellsworth Community College.

But the night belonged to Tyron Woodley, as he dominated the fight before ending it with an arm bar submission at 3:38 of the second round. His record now stands at 4-0, with all four wins coming by submission.

We spoke with Tyron Woodley about his latest victory, his transition from wrestling to mixed martial arts, and why he stopped wrestling. We discussed his positive experience with Strikeforce as a fighter. He explained why he believes that he was not chosen for "The Ultimate Fighter" television show: because he would not act like a "moron". We discussed his training with the world-renowned American Top Team, as well as at St. Charles MMA in St. Charles, Missouri, near where he lives. We also spoke about his graduate studies and his goals outside of combat sports, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Juan Manuel Lopez-Rogers Mtagwa Fight of the Year Candidate Review

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses what was supposed to be a sleepy weekend for boxing filled with one-sided showcase fights, which ended up featuring top candidates for the upset of the year and the fight of the year -- neither of which, however, were easily accessible on television.

Super featherweight Jorge Linares of Venezuela, called by many the "future of boxing", had recently signed with Golden Boy Promotions after being based in Japan, and was supposed to have a final showcase fight in Tokyo Saturday, October 10, with Juan Carlos Salgado of Mexico before starting to spend most of his time in the ring in America. Salgado went into this fight unbeaten, but had never faced a top fighter like Linares. Nonetheless, a Salgado left hook early in the first round caught Linares flush and dropped him hard. While he was able to get up, he was badly hurt, and Salgado resumed the fight by rushing across the ring to end the job. It was over in just 1:13 of the first round, with the unbeaten record and title belt of Linares gone, and his own future in doubt.

On the other side of the world, also on Saturday, October 10, Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico, another fighter already anointed the "future of boxing", was slated for a showcase fight at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, to defend his 122-pound title against scrappy journeyman Rogers Mtagwa, originally from Tanzania and now from Philadelphia. A tough fight was expected, as Mtagwa was already in a 2008 Fight of the Year candidate when he came back from almost being stopped in the ninth round to knock out Tomas Villa in the tenth. The idea was for Lopez to win, and later move up to featherweight to face 2004 Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa of Cuba and Miami, who is also unbeaten as a pro and was also in a showcase fight on this card.

The Lopez-Mtagwa fight, however, turned into a brawl far wilder and closer than either Lopez of his promoters, Top Rank, had anticipated. While Lopez won the earlier rounds, Mtagwa kept throwing and landing bombs, and more effectively as the fight proceeded. Mtagwa almost had Lopez out in the 11th round, and dominated in the 12th round. Lopez survived, but when the unanimous decision in his favor was announced, many in what had been a pro-Lopez crowd booed the decision.

After the fight, we had a chance to get the comments of both Juan Manuel Lopez and Rogers Mtagwa. We also got postfight comments from other fighters on this card, including Yuriorkis Gamboa, who scored a fourth-round TKO over Whyber Garcia of Panama; heavyweight Odlanier Solis of Cuba, who knocked out Monte Barrett of New York in the second round; super welterweight Pawel Wolak of Poland and now New Jersey, who stopped Carlos Nascimento of Brazil after five rounds; and middleweight John Duddy of Ireland and New York, who won a unanimous decision over Jorge Munoz of Kansas.

Plus, right outside the Garden after the fights, we summed up the evening with New York television host Kristal Hart.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Lerwell, Cage Fighting Drag Queen

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel "Lion Heart" Lerwell, one of the two self-described cage fighting drag queens from Swansea, Wales, who received international notoriety after beating back an attack by two thugs on August 30.

When Daniel Lerwell, his friend James Lilley, and a group of their friends went out socializing the night of August 30, the night before a national holiday in the UK, they decided to have some fun by dressing in drag, as women. However, Lerwell and Lilley was attacked by two men, described in the UK media as drunken "yobs", who apparently thought that these men dressed in drag were easy targets.

They soon found out otherwise, as they were quickly dropped by Lerwell and Lilley, and later arrested by the police.

Daniel "Lion Heart" Lerwell and James "Lights Out" Lilley, it turns out, are both mixed martial arts fighters who train at the Predator Gym, which is affiliated with the legendary Gracie Barra Academy. Lilley is also a professional boxer. So while these two yobs might have thought that they were in for an easy night of gay-bashing or drag queen-bashing, they ended up in jail, bruised and battered from the effective self-defense of their would-be victims.

The video of the attack was captured on closed circuit cameras, and has become a major hit on YouTube.

There is also a Facebook group about all this, called Done By Men In Drag.

We had a chance Friday morning to speak by phone with Daniel "Lion Heart" Lerwell about this attack, its lessons, and his fighting career. He has been besieged by mainstream media requests, but took the time out to speak with us on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Fight against Corruption in Sport; Paul Paone of MMA World Expo

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins with a discussion of the "Call for action against all forms of corruption in sport" issued by the Play the Game organization and signed by numerous major sports figures and journalists from around the world. It is obvious that such a struggle against corruption is particularly urgent in the combat sports, and we thus urge all honest fans, media, athletes, and anyone else in the combat sports world to support it.

There will be an important event for the mixed martial arts on October 24 and 25 in New York, where this sport, thanks to the politicians of all species and the mainstream media, is still illegal. The MMA World Expo takes place those dates at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, and will offer hands-on instruction from top trainers and athletes in the combat sports. There will also be discussion panels, including one each day on the future and history of mixed martial arts, at which I will be one of the speakers. There will be numerous exhibits from mixed martial arts vendors. And this will be a great place to network and meet with people from this sport.

To preview this event, we spoke with Paul Paone, the creator and event director of the MMA World Expo.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier, 1-0 in MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier, the two-time U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler who was victorious in his mixed martial arts debut September 25 with a second-round TKO over Gary Frazier on a Strikeforce card in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

While fighting professionally in mixed martial arts may be new to Daniel, competing in combat sports certainly is not. We discussed how his extensive wrestling experience prepared him for this fight, both in terms of technique and also entering a cage for this fight. We analyzed the fight itself, and what lessons he drew from it. We also commented on the recent World Wrestling Championships, and the overall disappointing performance by the American wrestlers at it. We learned of his desire to return to the mat for several upcoming major freestyle wrestling tournaments, while also preparing to fight again before this year is over. Among many other topics, he also told us about the coming launch of a Team Thirsty web site with Mo Lawal, Shawn Bunch, and Rashad Evans. And we concluded our lengthy interview with some comments about the upcoming Showtime super middleweight boxing tournament.

So there you have it: mixed martial arts, wrestling, and boxing, all with Daniel Cormier, and only on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Odlanier Solis, More Boxing Self-Destruction

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the continuing failure of the boxing establishment to provide the fans with the fights they want, and to make the videos available to them when they want and where they want. Some of the latest examples from this past weekend are the John Murray-Jon Thaxton lightweight fight in the UK, the David Tua-Shane Cameron heavyweight fight in New Zealand, and the Prizefighter heavyweight tournament in the UK won by Audley Harrison, all of which are or were available for free online, either live or on sites like YouTube. This is another hard-hitting exposition about the mess that has been dragging down boxing, especially in the U.S.

This coming Saturday, October 10, boxing returns to Madison Square Garden in New York with a card headlined by three exciting undefeated fighters. This show will be telecast on pay-per-view in the U.S.

WBO junior featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs) of Puerto Rico fights Rogers Mtagwa (26-12-2, 18 KOs) of Tanzania and Philadelphia, who won a 2008 Fight of the Year candidate against Tomas Villas with a 10th-round TKO.

WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (15-0, 13 KOs), originally from Cuba and now fighting out of Miami, and a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, takes on veteran Whyber Garcia (22-6, 15 KOs) from Panama.

Heavyweight prospect Odlanier Solis (14-0, 10 KOs), also originally from Cuba and now fighting out of Miami, and also a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, takes on former title challenger Fres Oquendo (31-5, 20 KOs).

We spoke with these three fighters, Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Odlanier Solis, at the kickoff news conference for this show at Madison Square Garden about their upcoming fights, their careers, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro Reviews 2009 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the 2009 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships, which took place September 26-27 in Barcelona, Spain, with our colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a senior editor of the ADCC News, and a correspondent on our show. The ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) tournament is an invitation-only event which takes place every two years to determine the best no-gi grapplers in the world.

We discuss the performance of the many stars who competed in this event, including Braulio Estima, who won both the Absolute and under 88kg divisions, and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, who decisioned Robert Drysdale in the Superfight. We evaluate the significance of this event, which Kid said is "getting bigger and bigger," why its future is "bright," the growing role of the ADCC Regionals in North America which are qualifiers for the 2011 ADCC tournament, the problem of athletes training for both grappling and mixed martial arts at the same time, and much more.
